Please Light A Candle for Matthew Sheppard.

Yesterday, October 13, was the 10th anniversary of the death of Matthew Sheppard. For those of you who don't know who he is, Matthew Sheppard was a boy who was beaten and then tied to a fence post because he was gay. He was left outside of town for almost 18 hours before someone found him and a few days later, he passed away. This boy should have never been tortured in that way just because he was a homosexual. It angers me at the fact that people would actually do that to someone for being different. So please, out of the kindness of your heart, light a candle for this boy. Or if you knew someone who was a homosexual and was killed because of it, light a candle in memory of them. R.I.P. Matthew Sheppard. <3

Welcome to the forum, Stephanie! Thank you for reminding us that discrimination against homosexuals may have deadly consequences. The story of Matthew Sheppard was profoundly upsetting when it happened and is still very disturbing. I will light a candle in memory of Matthew Sheppard in the ALL group. I hope you will visit this site often and share with us your experience and wisdom. Wishing you everything good, Edda

This was a terrible thing to happen to Matthew simpy because he was gay. Nobody should be treated in this appalling way because they are different. People have the right to be who they are without the fear of victimization sharon

Welcome to the forum, Stephanie . . . Yes, I remember the story of Matthew's death very well. Like Edda, I was and still am very disturbed by it. Thank you for your kind remembrance of him and his life. We all need to be reminded from time to time . . . we get so caught up in our busy lives, and turn a blind eye to some of the horrors in this world, not by malice, but it is easy to become "forgetful" of other peoples' anguish. I too, will light a candle for Matthew . . . Please visit often and share . . . with love . . . sparrow

Once again it's the fear of something different isn't it? I've had many gay friends in my life. I wish I had more. I will light a candle for him and all who are persecuted for being different in whatever way. Jude

Thank you everyone who has posted so far for your support. :) This was a horrible crime that was committed on an innocent boy who was just being who he was. Nobody should have to go though what Matthew went though and no one should have to live in fear of that happening to them either. Again, I thank everyone for their support. <3

connecticut is celebrating because its now legal in the state for gays to marry! on the other hand, there are countries where being gay is punishable by death. we have a lot of work left to do and i hope that we can all do whatever we can to create a world where being gay no longer causes so much discrimination and hate crimes. in memory of matthew shepphard i will light a candle (putting under matt). love to all, annie

I am so sorry to hear about Mathew, I will light a candle for him under my group "Jack". It is so saddening to hear about what others do to someone who is just a bit different from themselves

Sorry to hear about Matthew Shephard. No one should be tortured or killed just because of the life style they decide to live. No one has the right to judge anyone. We are not God and therefore we should leave that to Him.

I used to have two male friends who were gay (they were a couple). They were the most genuine people and very friendly. When I first met them I didn't realise they were gay or together for a while I thought they were friends. They didn't hide the fact it just hadn't come up. When I found out I didn't think anything less of them they were the same two people they were before I knew nothing had changed. We lost touch but I hope where ever they are they are still happy together . Its sad that in todays world people can't be accepted for who they are.
