What a brave giirl! You are providing as normal a life for her as her limitations permit. I feel for her as she longs to do the things other little girls can do. She can probably outshine them in other ways that don't require physical strength.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your mom only 2 short weeks ago! I wish I could reach out and give you a hug right now....Please know that I care, I have lost both parents, but it was awhile ago for me.
 
I wanted to tell you that it is not crazy, in my opinion, to talk to your mom every night. I think it is healing, natural and more common than you might think. I believe her spirit can hear you. And I believe very strongly that there is no wrong way to grieve.
 
I hope over time that things ease a little bit at a time regarding your pain.

I am so sorry to hear of the recent loss of your mother. Like Edda, I went back and looked at some posts from earlier this year, and saw that you had been caring for her . . . what a gift you have given her. I hope that this knowledge helps lift the grief a little. When my father died a few years ago, we took care of him at home . . . it felt to all of us in the family that we were encased in a beautiful shimmering cocoon of love separate from the outside world of petty cares and complaints. It was a very special, life-changing time for me, and although I have grieved his loss, I almost feel sometimes that he is closer to me now than he was in life.

Monday 8th December 2008
Today we had a hospital appointment at Nottingham QMC. Sophie had a lung function test and xray of her spine. Medical everything came back with no change from last year which has made my christmas. But then we had a chat with physio and family care support from the muscular dystrophy campain.
Sophie all of a sudden became very down and start say how she gets so angry about having CMD and "she never gets what she dreams off". The physio asked her what her dreams were and she said she wanted to ice skate, jump, surf, skateboard and dance. She told them that as she couldnt do this she was not a "Real Girl".
My beautiful little girl feels like only half a person. She got worryed about the future and that she will stop walking and need her chair.
I know she is finding things hard and I cant make it ok for her. I wish she could have all she dreams of too. And I wish she could see the wonderful person she is and all the amazing things she has acheived

That is so sad, and my heart goes out to you and Sophie. It is so hard to tell a child that being 'real' has nothing at all to do with what we can or cannot do. The fact is she really wants to do these things.
I'm glad though, that healthwise the news is good.
 
Bless her! I do hope something comes along to lift her spirits.

I am so sorry that little Sophie is having such a hard time, and does not feel like a "real girl". . . Would it be appropriate to read her the story of the "Velveteen Rabbit"? I immediately thought of this story when I read your message . . . it is all about what makes one "real"...a beautiful story.
Perhaps it could help her understand that what is real is inside, and you would have the extra joy of a good, sit-down read time with her.
It is hard when one so young is denied the normal dreams of a little girl. She dreams of things that she cannot physically do. Perhaps she could be inspired by a role model who has fulfilled her dreams by doing things other than the physical . . . like a wonderful writer or a beautiful singer, or a great humanitarian . . . someone who has overcome physical disability through the powers of heart and mind like Stephen Hawking?
Just a few thoughts I send your way. Blessings to you who care so deeply for this little girl. I wish for your family a miracle for Sophie . . . that she be able to get a peek at a greater world beyond her debilitating limitations.

I am so sorry that Sophie feels down and so acutely aware of everything she cannot do! I think Sparrow's suggestions are excellent. Perhaps Sophie can find something where she can excel and even be better than those not limited like her. We tend to identify with what we can do, not who we are. It is a hard lesson to learn so early in life.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I have ordered Velveteen Rabbit book thankyou for letting me know of that one. We have tried sports with Sophie she has played wheelchair foot ball and ice skating in her power chair but it is never enough and she gets very down after which can last for weeks. I wish I could make every thing better for her and give her what her heart dreams of. Thankyou for your support it means so much.
