Light a candle for a friend - 11/21/2008 10:14 PM
My friend Alan, whom I know from church, has been diagnosed with leukemia. He has had a lot of tests and is about to start chemotherapy. He is concerned how the treatment will affect him and how effective it will be.

Please, light a candle for him in the group Alan  .

Thank you so much,
Edda

Peace and joy!

Dear Edda . . .
I have been sick and have gotten behind here at the forum. This morning I return and feel the grief, the joy, the gratitude, and the pain of this wonderous world in which we live. I am happy when I read that Jackory has a new friend, and that Sue is beginning to feel the miracle of healing . . . I am also saddened to hear that others are suffering and in despair.
I will hold your friend Alan close to my heart, and pray for blessings and healing for him as he undergoes chemotherapy.
Please Edda, let him know he is not alone . . .
he is our brother
with much love . . .

Dear Margaret, thank you for joining the others in lighting a candle for Alan!
I just spoke to him on the phone just now. He told me that he was having a melancholy day, feeling very weak. His chemotherapy has started  and been effective already. I told him about the candles burning for him around the world and the prayers and good wishes. He is deeply grateful to everyone.

Please, continue lighting candles and keeping Alan in your prayers!

Thank you so much,
Edda
Peace and joy!

I will light another candle for Alan.  Something came to me while reading Hildegard's latest post.  What if we all keep a candle burning in our homes when we can; wouldn't it be awesome to also have real candles burning all around the world.  And by doing it we increase the God-Light in the world.

Dear Kriann . . .
That is a wonderful idea. The candle is so pure, and symbolizes so much that is pure and true. Thank you . . .
Dear Edda . . . I can see from your last message that Alan may still be feeling some shock and fear from his diagnosis. This part of the road is often the most difficult. Candles burning will help to light his way
with much and prayers for his recovery . . .

Dear Kriann I like that idea a lot. I believe Betty has one burning like that. I will dedicate a candle each day to those who come to Gratefulness and for those who need candles.

I too have lit a candle for Alan. Kriann, I've been wanting to light a candle too at home, I don't have any right now but I do have some incense sticks. It isn't quite the same I know as they don't give off light. I've been wanting to keep a candle lit for a few days know in the evenings for the people on the forum. I think I will go and get one of those big round ones. It is coming up to Christmas, and just seems appropriate some how.

With love to Alan and his family

Edda,

So sorry to hear about your friend, Alan. I'll light a candle for him here!
I just lit one in my home for all in need of light , love and guidance....
I love the idea of keeping one lit at least as much as that is possible when I am at home. I will keep his healing in my prayers.

Love,
Diane
Grateful to be here!

RE: Light a candle for a friend - 12/1/2008 7:39 AM
Your idea of keeping a candle lit at home is such a wonderful idea Kriann . . . it has not left me since your post last week. I used to do this, but since I have four cats this has not been as easy. I tried carrying my candle into whatever room I was in . . . but it's easy to forget, and as cats are often curious, unpredictable and yes, even unruly, I have grown more cautious, and sadly, do not do this much anymore.
But the strangest thing happened after reading your post . . . a package came in the mail for me . . . a friend of my mother, who I only met once, sent me a new kind of candle--one that does not require a match or a flame. It is made of wax like a candle and it flickers like a candle, but it is operated by a battery underneath. Why this woman whom I barely know would send me this I do not know . . . serendipity perhaps . . . but I now can leave a "candle" safely burning without fear of the cats getting hurt or burning the house down.

lilsparrow!  i have the same issues with my 3 cats.  i have one shelf i've made practically impossible for them to reach, but i still don't trust it.  i also am on a ton of medications that makes me a space case a lot of times.  i also have been using the candles.  we just bought batteries for them this week.  i'll light them right now!  if i can figure out how i'll take a picture of it, because its our winter display at the picture window.  could anyone tell me how to post a photo in a message?

Thank you, Diane, for your prayers!

I talked to Alan yesterday. The past week wasn't too good for him, but he felt better yesterday. He is about to start the next round of chemotherapy. The malignant cells have disappeared from his blood. We hope it stays that way. He is also receiving prophylactic therapy against central nervous system involvement through a shunt. He is getting a little tired of students coming and asking the same questions. Hasn't anyone told them to read the chart first?

Many thanks to all who have lit candles and are keeping Alan in their prayers,

Much love,
Edda
Peace and joy!

Edda, although I have not been able to post much lately, Jude is correct. Alan was immediately included in the "kitchen table candle" which burns constantly since I do not have cats that might disturb it. However, it is not an open flame candle. It is only about 6 inches high and is a heat proof "candle" similar to the old time oil lamps and burns candle oil. As with the old time oil lamps, the wick can be "trimmed" so that the flame is extremely small and is always encased in the heat proof "chimney". You are all correct, an open flame regular wax candle would be much too dangerous to be left alone. For any who are interested, I began this practice some 15 years ago when the guys were 2300 miles away from home at college. In all these years, even leaving it lit when I am not home, there has never been a problem. Each time I come into the kitchen it reminds me to tuck special prayers in for all those on the forum and all those others who need extra prayers. Edda, know that Alan has been there since the beginning even though I haven't had a chance to light a candle on line yet.
Yesterday is gone forever.Tomorrow may not come. Live Fully each moment today. Look for Good Things that Happen to you Every Day.

Thank you Edda for telling us how Alan is. I am going to light another candle for him and pray that he continues to get better and better.

Betty, your candle sounds great as my memory is not brilliant and I do worry about lighting a normal candle at home, even one of those little tiny cup candles that you can get. I am going to try to look out to see if I can get one from somewhere;

With love to Edda, Alan, and to all

I cannot quite picture your candle Betty. I feel that way about my candle . . . that when "lit" it contains all the warm feelings and prayers that I have for people.
Edda, perhaps Alan's "complaining" of the students is a sign that he is feeling a little better? When my husband has been sick, I always know he is on the mend when his ability to complain returns .
I hope that Alan continues to improve and that the malignant cells stay gone . . . my little candle burns for him as well
with much love . . .

Thank you all for your prayers!

Alan has so far responded well to chemotherapy, and sacrificed his hair for the cause! He is expecting to go home for a few days before the next round of therapy.

Please, keep him in your prayers that he may continue to respond and go into full remission!

Thank you,
Love,
