GURU FREDDIE What is it about cats - that cat - that captivates my attention, connects with me in mysterious ways, causes me to watch over his catnap? He is my meditation companion, teaching me to simply be in the "now", responding to the moment, enjoying the warmth and safety of a trusted other until his need for rest is fulfilled. Then he goes back outside to enjoy the warming sunshine and to satisfy his curiosity about life around him. I slowed down with him and now I'm moving on to the tasks of the moment. Freddie, my neighbor's "street-wise" cat, has moved on to cat heaven! I'll never forget the lessons he has taught me! Edda

Edda - i am sorry that your neighbours had their cat taken up to cat heaven. i used to have a cat myself. i am looking forwad with being able to see her one day. she was a beautiful little moggie. Edda i liked what you posted too, it was an excellent depiction of the life as a cat, but the end really made me think.

Dear Edda, can we please see some more? You would think, as a great cat lover, that I would have written poems about them, but....not one! Jude

Jude, since you asked, I'll post another poem! BEATRICE This miniature edition of a cat - gray coat marked with a blend of tiger stripes and leopard spots in black, big ears, legs held stiffly, tail with an extra curve - exploding with energy, leaping forward and sideways, falling over at times, skidding along the floor, jumping on everything in reach. There is excitement and wonder in her lively eyes darting about in search fro something new to try, not yet afraid of failure. She bounces on the older cats who tolerate her antics either with studied indifference or tempted to regress to kittenish ways, engaging in a playful wrestle or spirited chase. When they remember their maturity, they may raise a paw or even hide from her rambunctious attacks. And ever so often she will stand still long enough, or even settle on a lap, to be stroked and petted, purring contentedly. She has her kitten food but prefers to imitate the older cats, eating theirs, and they in turn try to sneak her richer morsels. Watching Beatrice makes me almost envy her boundles energy and curiosity and reminds me of the carefree play of children, unencumbered by the caution and fers of grown-ups. Beatrice is now about twelve years old but still, small and very lively. She is the first one up on the counter, when a can of food is being opened to see if it meets her approval. It seems she is the sort of cat who will never grow up! Edda

Dear Edda thank you! That describes a young cat so perfectly....and the older ones. I could see them so clearly, and know that is exactly how they are. The parts about the young one jumping on the older cats and the swapping food....just what they do. Mine still do prefer each others food rather than their own, even though it's all the same!! Jude

Dear Edda, I don't know if you saw the first picture, but it seems the owner of the pic doesn't like it being used!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was of a kitten about to pounce on a big ginger cat. Jude

There used to be a bookstore in Oak Park, IL called "Left Bank". LEFT BANK CAT A life-sized figure of a beautiful, gray tiger cat sits in the middle of a show window, surrounded by all sorts of books - part of the display. But then the figure stirs and stretches languidly as only a cat can do, exposing its white underside. The come-to-life cat turns about to find a comfortable position, splayed on its side, settling down for a nap amidst the books, quite unimpressed by the collective wisdom surrounding it, self-possessed, secure in its place, simply being CAT. Edda
