I love the poem,
dear Edda . . .
and I think it is wonderful
when cats inhabit a store.

Our local Agway has a resident cat
who greets customers,
and a pet supply store in a nearby town
has one
that always sleeps in the window.
When I went to "Jackalope",
a fabulous indoor/outdoor store in Santa Fe,
cats graced the woven rugs and tapestries
from Mexico and South America
that were spread about . . .
and it was not unusual to see one
curled up in one of the baskets for sale.
Thank you for the memories
with love . . .

Oh thank you for the cat pictures!
It's funny . . . says they were posted three hours before I visited this morning,
but were not visible when I posted . . .
anyway,
they are so typical of 'cat'
Thanks

Edda´s cat poems are great and so are the pictures posted here! Since I cannot contribute any of those I´d like to call your attention to some poetry, which, I am sure, you all know, but which I at least never tire of. Enjoy!

THE NAMING OF CATS

The naming of cats is a difficult matter,
It isn´t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I´m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

First of all, there´s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Baily -
All of them sensible everyday names.

There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.

But I tell you, a cat needs a name that´s particular,
A name that´s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?

Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.

But above and beyond there´s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.

When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name. - T.S.Eliot, Old Possum´s Book of Practical Cats

Thank you Juliana for the poem....it isn't one I've familiar with.
For me, and my cats, they never end up with the name they were first given, as it evolves over time into all sorts of nonsense!
For instance, one much loved cat who started life as Tiny Tina, ended up as Boodles!

Dear Juliana,

I wasn't familiar with this poem either! Thank you!

Sometimes I think the name of a cat is the sound of a can of cat-food being opened!

Love,
Edda

Dear Edda,  dear Jude,

T.S.Eliot´s cat poems provided the lyrics for the musical "Cats". It was very popular in Austria several years ago. I never saw it, but had CDs sent to me from the US.

Have a joyful Sunday!

Dear Juliana, yes, I am familiar with the musical, and I think I've got it taped on video!
If I everget around to sorting all my recorded things goodness knows what I shall find!

settling down for a nap
amidst the books,
quite unimpressed by
the collective wisdom
surrounding it,
self-possessed,
secure in its place,
simply being
CAT.

BEAUTIFUL POEM EDDA!

Most of my kitties have been named by my children...

They named the racoon that visits...Kirkland....because he loves Puff's food and that's it brand name!

. . . love the name 'Kirkland' ,
and yes Juliana,
I am very familiar with that poem,
and the fact
that cats have (at least) three names . . .
This is Freddie,
my neighbor . . .

He comes to his window
when I water the flowers up front.
His ears were notched
when he was captured on the streets,
before they realized he was not a feral cat . . .
he is very sweet.
