Unable To Clear My Mind...
-
1/19/2009 12:54 AM
Lately when I go to bed. I find myself unable to clear my mind. Thoughts race through my head. And I'm unable to relax. My mom once gave me a Paxil tablet. She has anxiety and she thought it would help me. It didn't.I told her.and now she suggests that I just think of something pleasant when I close my eyes. I try too. But,I can't. I fear that someone is near me and will choke me.This may sound crazy as no else is in the room but me.And sometimes I shake so bad.My stomach becomes upset and I end up having to go to the bathroom. Is this a disorder? I live in a small town and can't drive to a doctor because of a disability.I've tried so hard to go but our bus service has stopped because of limited funding. Please help.I'm doing my parting by read health info websites and other articles...

Dear Leanda, It sounds to me as if you are suffering anxiety. This alone can cause many physical symptoms and is not harmful in itself. I have recently bought (online) a Paul McKenna book and CD called "I Can Make You Sleep." I had been having trouble getting off to sleep and also kept waking up in the night several times. I listen to the CD through headphones as I lay down to go to sleep. So far I have not heard the end of the CD and have been sleeping better. Also, try slowing your breathing and do relaxed breathing into your tummy. Put your hands on your tummy and feel it go up and down. We tend to breathe only at the top of our chests, especially when feeling anxious, and that will make our muscles tense up, making us feel more anxious. My Yoga teacher once told us that the way we (especially women) are taught to hold our tummies in, instead of being as nature intended us to be, is responsible for a lot of emotional illness. I hope this helps you. Love, Jude

Hi Leanda, I am sorry that you are being troubled by a "chatterbox mind" at the moment, a state that I think many of us will recognise and sympathise with. I think often this can be a "system overload" in that we have so many things to think about and juggle that it is difficult to switch off. What you describe sounds horrible, you are not going crazy at all, they are symptoms of overload. A couple of things you might want to consider- Mindfulness Meditation ( if you cannot access a class, there are books and CDs, one of the author's is Jon Kabbat-zin, Google him!) and a book " Self Help for your Nerves" by Claire Weekes. There are also many other forms of meditation and relaxation techniques, other therapies and approaches that I am sure others here, will be able to provide information on. Sending you prayers of love, peace and tranquility Namaste Glenys x

Please have your mother help call a doctor and arrange transportation to get you to an appointment. It sounds like you are having a lot of anxiety. Its helpful to look at websites, but you need to contact a doctor to get a professional opinion. The same way you would contact a doctor if you sprained an ankle, you need to contact a doctor when mental health issues come up. As for sites that help with anxiety, try googling things like anxiety support or anxiety help. Maybe you can find forums or email groups at yahoogroups? Also check into NAMI (http://www.nami.org). I hope this helps. Keep us updated.

Dearest Leanda, My thoughts are with you right now, like Jude I feel maybe you are suffering from anxiety. Maybe have a bath by candle light before bed ,as this helps me to let go off some of my anxiety. I also have invested in a Children's bible as I find the stories in there heal my mind in many ways. I try to read two stories a night ,not saying you should invest in one but for me it gives me an inner peace to read something so nice. The ladies are right cd's can help and put your mind at rest. It's very sad that the local bus service has stopped because of lack of funds.Just remember though the web can help you in many ways.I found this link that you may want to look at. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib22Us5YqcI Take care of yourself ,Sandraxx

Dear Leanda . . . We all experience times of anxiety I think, and sometimes 'home remedies' are very helpful. Like warm milk with a little honey at bed time, a soothing, scented bath, listening to calming music or meditations . . . but it sounds as if your anxiety is not responding. As Kriann has said it might be time to see a doctor, just as you would for a sprained ankle or other injury or illness. Please let us know dear Leanda, how you are doing. You are much in my thoughts and prayers with much love . . . sparrow

Thank you Sandra....a trip down memory lane. I remember this hymn being one of my favourites when at primary school, although we sang it to a different tune. I was interested to see John Rutter was born the same year as me...a good year that! I just love his compositions. Jude

Dear Leanda, I am sorry to be responding to you so late. You have already received a lot of excellent advice! I do have a question, what do you do before you go to bed? A warm bath, CDs, calming reading have already been suggested. I might mention what NOT to do, watch the news on TV, or any programs that are heavy in any way. It would probably be best to turn off the TV altoghether, if you have been watching it. Phsical exercise or any brain-stimulating activities are excellent but at another time of day! Go withwhatever calms your mind. And finally, some suggest a warm glass of milk as a help to fall asleep. Please, do get the help you need! Much love, Edda

Leanda, I'm so sorry to hear about you not being able to sleep. I do agree with the others and I think that you have some anxiety. I like the others think that everyone has some at some point. I know that when things are weighting heavy on my mind that I have a hard time sleeping. Please try to get to a doctor or have your mom call one if your syptoms perstist. Please know that we are here for you anytime. I will light a candle for you.
