What a great idea this is. How do we get the word out about the candle group so more people light candles for and pray for this and for peace?

I just lit some candles for President Bush to be protected from evil and to be blessed with the gift of discernment so he can tell God's Will from  what he *thinks* God's will is! And of course to do God's Will.

Dear Dianne, welcome to the forum! You are right, we need to pray for peace and invite all we can reach to do the same. Also, we need to pray for ALL world leaders to discern what is in the best interest of all. People of good will may have different ideas and strategies. We need to respect them even when we don't agree. Mutual respect is the basis for a fruitful dialogue among them.
Joining you in praying for peace,
Edda
Peace and joy!

Adding my prayers for President Bush and all leaders in the world to follow God's agenda and not their own. May peace and grace fill this earth.

Fire the Grid. Bush has only facilitated the war and he's been given no reason to see it end. The fault, if it's necessary to place it, is not on him. He did not elect himself president. I'm grateful for Bush. His inaction to stop the bloodshed has stirred and awoke our minds. Now that I'm awake, I intend on being very, very busy!

Just a thought. . . . There's something about praying for "peace" that seems very general and vague to me.  Perhaps our prayer energy can be more effective if we can direct it to the healing of the hearts and spirits of the insurgents who continue to murder hundreds--thousands--of innocent civilians in order to make their "statements" and to keep the region unstable.  People in that region have long suffered from lack of hope and opportunity, disenfranchisement, and political manipulation, and the anger that we see manifested comes partly from their reactions to outside influences.  I believe that peace will come to the region only when the insurgents can find it in their hearts to forgive, and for that they need healing.  We have to ask ourselves why it's so easy for them to recruit new insurgents so regularly, and then pray for changes in the situations that make young people feel so desperate that they see murder and mayhem as the only viable outlet for their frustrations. . . .

Welcome to the forum, David! You make some excellent points. Thank you for your thoughtful input! There are many ways to pray for peace. I don't know what others think about in their prayer but I pray for good will on all sides in a very complex situation. I think it is up to individuals how they want to direct their energy. You are absolutely right, there is a great need for forgiveness and healing. I am sure you understand that any political discourse is outside the purpose of this forum; people have many different opinions. They may want to focus, like you, on what seems most important to them. This freedom is something I appreciate about this forum.
Wishing you everything good,
Edda
Peace and joy!

Hi David,

Have you come across Pierre Pradervand's book "The Gentle Art of Blessing" ?
In it he suggests we Bless, or send Blessings to the person or persons in question. I have found this more effective than trying to forgive for instance. a) It has a better effect on how I feel, and b) it sometimes has a remarkable effect on the person who is Blessed.
For example, if we are angry or in disagreement with our government's actions, we might say "Bless (whoever) in his wisdom or decision making. Say a political figure wishes to take us to war, we might say, "Bless (whoever) in his peacemaking or peacefulness.

I'm new to this method, but have already found it effective in my personal life. Anything is worth a try for a more peaceful and loving world.  J

Hmm. . . . I suppose this forum isn't for me, judging from the response to my previous post.  I'm not sure how my post can be seen as political.  The current situation for young people in many Arab countries is pretty abysmal, given unemployment over 20% in many places, college graduates who are unable to find work (and thus unable to start families, given Arab norms of supporting families), and many other factors.  Until this sort of thing is dealt with effectively, there will be a lot of anger and resentment towards any outsiders, and this creates a fertile environment for groups like the insurgents.  Much of the current situation is the residual result of a very arbitrary "creation" of the present Arab states--by the British--early in the 20th century, an act that artificially created very negative social dynamics in many cases.

The ONLY reason there isn't peace in Iraq right now is the many insurgent groups who are killing innocent people.  Until the insurgents decide to lay down their arms, there will be no peace.  Personally, I prefer to pray for the change of heart that can come only through forgiveness than to pray for something as broad and undefined as "peace."

A doctor who is treating a patient doesn't treat with a goal of "health"--he or she goes for the source of the problem and tries to treat and eradicate the sickness, thus restoring health.  The energy that we send via prayer is very real, and if it's directed at something specific our prayers WILL garner much stronger results.  We'll get peace only when the people who are preventing peace are able to change their minds and feel compassion rather than anger and resentment.

I really don't see any political leanings at all in my post. . . .

peace to all,

david

David:

I appreciate the eloquence with which you articulated your position. I believe that focused energy, when directed, can be much more fruitful, too. The fact that there's thousands of years of history documenting the struggles in this area shows that a deep healing is necessary; for this I have no argument (nor do I want one). You've reminded me that I should be precise when I'm channeling energy. Otherwise, it may be energy not well spent.

I believe that Edda's comment regarding political discourse was meant to encourage a focus on the good each person, individually, can contribute. I follow an Earth-based religion, Emil and Edda are followers of Christ, Richard  (I believe - correct me if I'm wrong, Richard) follows a Buddhistic path, and, I do believe, followers of Judaism and Islam also contribute to these forums. Now, when is the last time you saw 5 (count them.. 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5!) religions encourage each other? Pray together? Pray for each other? It is a beautiful thing that has been started here and each of us has an instinctive tendancy to protect the diversity that grows here, so that every person may feel free and blessed in contributing the best they have. The power in your post, the passion and vigilance, might be recieved as "Do It This Way!" as opposed to the "Here's a suggestion" intention that encouraged you to participate in the conversation. As a mediator, Edda is obligated to ensure that every person can feel at ease here. She is a wonderful person that would never intentionally make anyone feel as though "this forum isn't for them."

You have a powerful voice that can contribute to these conversations; I hope you think so, too!

Arow, thank you for coming to my rescue and explaining better and more eloquently what I had in mind. The diversity of traditions is as wonderful as you describe and enriches us all. Each has something special to contribute.

David, I am sorry if I put you off. This was certainly not my intention. Your contribution to this forum is most welcome. Your honesty in explaining your feelings allows us to come to a mutual understanding, thank you!

With every good wish,
Edda
Peace and joy!

I am grateful for a Godly president amd who is doing everything he can in a time that the world is under seige.  He has protected this nation from further terrorist plots and kept the terrorists busy on their own turf instead of among our citizens.

I pray that God continues to give him wisdom despite the criticism.  He has a very difficult job and a time that there will not be any peace.  This nation has rarely been at complete peace, we began in war, divided in war, attacked on Dec 7 and Sep 11.  Americans need the same resolve that we had the first time we were attacked only this time our citizens were attacked by ruthless cowards who send their young children to be sacrificed among unarmed civilians instead bravely fighting themselves.

I salute the brave men and women in our military, the best in the world.
