Universal Truth...

The essence of idolatry lies in the identification of the symbol with the symbolized, of the particular with the universal. Such historical figures as Gautama Buddha, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Lao-tzu, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, etc. have some divinity or uncommon holiness about them. They may be regarded as particular manifestations in history of the one universal and timeless Godhead. The divine spark which is latent in all was actively manifest in them in an extraordinary degree. But when their followers fail to grasp the self-transcending significance of their Masters as symbols of the one formless Godhead, they become idolatrous. The greatest need of our present time is to rise above such parochial thinking, and to develop a cosmic perspective in religion. In the interests of cultural harmony and human unity it is important for us to realize today that the founders of the great historical religions were equally divine and equally human manifestations in history of the one dynamic world-spirit. Each had a particular mission to fulfill in a particular historical epoch. Each delivered a message which was particularly needed at the time. In order to be useful and effective, the teaching of each had to be cast into a mould in conformity with the intellectual climate and socio-political conditions of the time. With changes in human society the mould of teaching or formulation of truth must needs change. Appreciation of the immense value and significance of a particular historical-religious figure need not involve attaching absoluteness and finality to his teachings in all its details. (Haridas Chaudhuri, Integral Yoga: The Concept of Harmonious and Creative Living) Great Physician, we ask for the healing of body, mind and spirit. Reveal any hindrances to this healing and give us courage to trust in your Divine generosity and friendship. We give you thanks for hearing our prayer. Amen. (A fellow pilgrim)
