For me Isabella sorry is a very sad word in the sense  I used it an awful lot when I was little and still do I guess.Yes we all should say sorry and mean it but at times it's said out of fear and there should be nothing to fear not ever.

You have received quite a few answers to your question of when to say "sorry". I perceive it as somewhat difficult to answer for people who are not native speakers of English, like you and me. For in German we say "Entschuldigung" when English speakers will say "I´m sorry". The literal meaning, however,  is "Es tut mir leid". So it is necessary to distinguish each time which of the two meanings is intended. I remember people saying (ironically), "You sound it!", when some one was using "I´m sorry" as a mere phrase, without really meaning it.

There is another option in English which comes closer to "Entschuldigung",
Please, excuse....my being late, forgetting to..., my absence from....
It is more a way of explaining what one has or hasn't done. Of course many people will say, "I am so sorry I....."
 
"PLease, excuse me!"  is also used, when leaving the table or when having to leave a gathering before others do.
 
"I am sorry!" hopefully conveys a feeling!

It is not easy, to miss, and many things I enjoy, make of the other side my heart so oppressive, it is a riot of good and sad feelings if know, that I cannot change the facts;
 
it´s a succession of warm feelings if kind things happen and icy, sometimes moments later, because I am always aware, that the losses I have, are behind the railing who is wobbly by going on.

We all have these feelings from time to time.The things we cannot change we need to try somehow to  'let them be'.It's not an easy thing to do but if we don't do this they can 'eat away at us over time'.It does not mean we agree/except  them though but it will allow our hearts to heal .
 
I think we all must 'hold on to the railing' and it time it will become less wobbly and will guide us on our way....

I know many people feel they are 'not accepted'. I am one of them but I am trying so hard to tell myself it's not a reflection on me it's where that person is in life.

It is crazy:
In the meanwhile food is cooking, cards are written, an evening is coming, to be close with friends, my thoughts always look behind, behind to what happen, to things, I cannot change, to people I am missing so much. In some hours it would be very good, to smile, and smiles are not coming from the head...
One year as another, in some fact changed to more pain, in some facts to be shown as it´s always the same, year by year. I am feeling, as I would lie tied up and need to get more strength to come up, every year it needs more strength.
To be thankful for the destiny it is really hard.
 
To have people, as my daughter and son, my friends, it can only mean, that I have to be grateful, to have them some times near to me, because I wouldn´t see, that some days of a year, can be really happy.
