Today I am very grateful for another sunny Autumn day after yesterday's rough and windy weather.
 
That I took pictures of the late flowers before the stormy weather
 
For my camera to take them with
 
For some new photographs put on my computer by a friend, which I can look at at leisure and choose pictures for my next year's calendar
 
For my freezer, in which I can store apples and plums and other goodies, and from which I can choose something for lunch
 
For music and new artists found on the Internet while browsing
 
For my new mandolin, which waits for me until it has a case of its own
 
For my Summer job that allows me to pay for the mandolin
 
For the stranger who contacted me through GenesReunited, and may be a distant relative. He has reawoken my interest in family history searching.
 
For 2 good nights sleep in a row
 
For little Blackberry, getting so frail, but still interested in life
 
For my computer, so I can visit all of you every day

Today I am most grateful for a phone call from and long conversation with a former student. I had hastily informed him of one of Brother David´s conferences in Austria as soon I had unexpectedly heard of it. He gave me a complete summary of it, and he emphasized how deeply grateful he was for being able to experience Brother David´s wisdom. Also he had taken a friend from Germany there, who was just staying with him. To this friend it also meant a lot, since he was in a deep personal crisis...

I too, would like to say
how beautiful your labour of love is,
dear Betty and Sandra and HolyOne . . .
the magical music and video.
Although a little younger perhaps,
than our Juliana,
I do remember days before television,
when all we had was radio and victrola . . .
what wonders and miracles of technology,
more complex than my poor brain can imagine!
In 1904 my grandfather purchased this music box,
which now sits in my bedroom . . .
this was musical entertainment in the home
before the discovery of electricity . . .
it entertains me still.

How lucky you are Sparrow to own such a wonderful music box! I've only ever seen them on the Antiques Roadshow.
 
I too remember days before television. In fact, as we lived in a local authority house, we were very late getting electricity. I was given a very old wind-up record player at about age 6 or 7, together with the Beverly Sisters singing "The Mama Doll Song" and I well remember the radio which ran on heavy acumulators, and had to be taken to the shop to be recharged.
I recently saw a documentary program that is going back over the history of technology, and a group of schoolchildren were shown a Dansette multi-play record player (one of which I had at age 14) None of the children had any idea what it was!!

Yes Jude . . .
I am very lucky.
The music box was mouldering away in the attic of my grandparents' house,
when my mother,
a young college girl at the time,
was walking home from classes,
and saw one in an antique store window.
She came home glowing,
and announced to the family
that that was what she wanted for her upcoming birthday.
It is funny . . .
the previous day
my grandfather had called to arrange to have it carted off,
along with some other old pieces of furniture!
He canceled the junk man, brought it down,
polished it up,
and presented it to my mother on her birthday.
It was in my house as I grew up.
I loved to play the old discs
(there are 28, including everything
from old, old hymns, to classical, to dance music of the day) . . .
I would close the lid
and lay my head upon it,
listening through the wood . . .
it was magical.
When my parents began to pare down their belongings
they shipped it out to me.
It is now one of my most treasured possessions . . .
