Sage Advice Ladies and gentlemen: Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing every day that scares you. Sing Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself. Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements. Stretch. Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's. Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own. Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out. Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40, it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. The Positive Side Living on earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year. Birthdays are good for you, the more you have, the more wisdom you have. Happiness comes through the doors you didn't remember ever opening. Ever notice that the people that are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them? If discount stores are lowering prices everyday, how come nothing is free yet? You may be only one person in this world, but you may also be the world to one person. Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once. We could learn alot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have unusual names....but they all exist nicely in the same box. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery with a smile on their face, on a detour. Marie

Marie, I love this thread and all you add to it. It always brings a smile to my heart and I look forward to your postings. Thankful one, Sage Advice has so many truths to it. Thanks for posting it. I think at one point in one's life it can become a priority to find the good, the positive in what life has to offer and to be the best you can be. Only by learning from past mistakes and through seeking a better way to go about. A road that was necessary to go through, in relationships. You never stop learning about the self, "me". Far away in the tropical waters of the Caribbean, two prawns were swimming around in the sea - one called Justin and the other called Chris. Prawns were constantly being harassed and threatened by sharks that patrolled the area. Finally, one day during a tropical storm, Justin said to Chris, "I'm bored and frustrated at being a prawn, I wish I was a shark - and then I wouldn't have any worries about being eaten...." As Justin had his mind firmly on becoming a predator, a flash of lightning hits the water and lo and behold, Justin turns into a shark. Horrified, Chris immediately swims away, afraid of being eaten by his old friend. Time went on, and Justin found himself becoming bored and lonely as a shark. All his old friends simply swam away whenever he came close to them. Justin hardly realizing that his new menacing appearance was the cause of his sad plight. During the next tropical storm, Justin figures that the same lightning force could change him back into a prawn. Lightning never strikes twice except in stories like these, but while he was thinking of being a prawn again, a flash of lightning strikes the water next to Justin and lo and behold, he turns back into a prawn. With tears of joy in his tiny little eyes Justin swims back to his friends and buys them all a cold beverage. Looking around the gathering at the reef, he looks for his old pal. "Where's Chris?" he asked. "He's at home, distraught that his best friend changed sides to the enemy and became a shark" came the reply. Eager to put things right again and end the mutual pain and torture, he sets off to Chris' house. As he opens the coral gate, the memories come flooding back. He bangs on the door and shouts "It's me, Justin, your old friend. Come out and see me again!" Chris replies, "No way man. You'll eat me. You're a shark; the enemy. I will not be tricked." Justin cries back, "No I'm not. That was the Old me. I have changed.... I'm a prawn again Chris....!!" Marie

Jessica thank you for your posting. All of the sayings are something to remember. As for posting pictures, at first I was getting "stuck". I would post the picture in the thread but when I went to preview post it was not there, but it did post in the first screen. Why? I do not know. So now I preview it to make sure it is really there. I am not techie at all so it takes many times of trying until I accidentally get it right. Hope this may help. Thanks Marie
