I am grateful to have this site to light a candle for my Bijou but I am curious about one thing. Why do the candles only stay lit for 48 hours? Can I have it burn brightly for a longer time?

Dear Lynn, welcome to the forum!
I think the candles burn for only 48 hours because otherwise too much space may remain filled on this site. Have you looked at the huge number of candles burning at any given time? This is also the reason for the limits on the number of candles we can light (see the top thread concerning this). There is no reason for you not to return and light another candle for Bijou. You could start a candle group for Bijou and keep it going. This would allow you to find your candle easily when it is burning down, and to light a fresh one. I don't want to presume anything, so I ask if Bijou is a child who is sick or one you have lost?

I hope this helps!

Wishing you everything good,
Edda
