Dear Glenys, Special prayers for Bobi that his 21st birthday is a truly wonderful day. May you congratulate yourself on the gift you have given him. I was often reminded with our own sons that "if you love them, you will give them roots and wings--roots to know that you will always be there for them and wings for them to fly away and begin the life planned for them by the Holy One. The first birthday they are away is always difficult and all future such birthdays, holidays, etc., are tinged with sadness on the part of us moms; but what a gift you have given him to be secure enough in his own personhood to be able to come to such a milestone away from home. I often think what a gift our ancestors were--all those moms who set their sons and daughters free to pursue their own dreams in a time when there wasn't even the telephone, much less the computer. I was often told by wise individuals that as parents/moms, we are merely God's temporary caretakers, there to nourish, safeguard, guide, encourage, and then set free so that each child turned adult will follow God's plan for his/her life no matter where that may take them or the heart hurt inside as we watch them go. Although I can hear the sadness in your email, I can only say Congratulations Mom, it sounds like you have done your job well.

I echo Betty's wise words. It is difficult to let go and let them live their own lives.

I too congratulate you Glenys.

Love, Jude

Glenys, I remember the time when young men wore their hair long upsetting especially their fathers. Now some shave their heads! My comment was, let them enjoy their hair as long as they have it!
After some time normalcy returns! Was this what you were waiting for?!

Glenys,

What you have told us about Bobi reminds me of the story of another mother. She had long wanted her son to have his hair cut, which he wore in a thick pony tail (is this what you call it?) He had always refused to change his hair style. On her birthday she received a package and wondered what the gift in it would be. Yes, it was her son“s pony tail!

Marshall B. Rosenberg also tells a nice story. When his son, then a teenager,  came home after his first day at a new school, he reported that one teacher had acted somewhat strangely. Seeing him with his long hair, he had joked, "Oh, we have a girl here!" "And how did you react?" "I remembered what you told me. I just put on my giraffe ears (i.e.not hearing blame or criticism). This man has a problem with hair - he is bald."

I had to laugh about Bobi's dreadlocks! In the early 70's my husband had long hair, actually a pony tail and I can remember how my father looked at him. Hair does not make the man.. my father's words..  our anniversary is this week August 7th (37 yrs) and his hair is very short and thinning... but I still love him the same.  Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory!

Happy birthday to your son, Bobi. You are a wonderful loving mother.

My friends, thank you ALL for sharing this journey with me!
Jude - for me, the dreadlocks were "another "way for Bobi to want to "stand out " ,"be different", nothing wrong with that. But the Mother on me was thinkiing he has lovely thick, naturally curly and shiny hair which he has worn long for about 5 years and which really suited him!!. HOWEVER, I did not say a word and hoped this 2 " fad" would pass as did having the tounge and lip piercings! Looks like it has, until the next thing........
Edda - I think there is much wisdom in your words as usual!
Juliana - your healthy perspective is always a tonic!
Vicky -Thank YOU!, hope little Jacob is doing well.
Love and warmest thoughts to each of you
Glenys

Glenys, I'm also reminded of my own Son when at university. He became a bit of a 'drop-out' and wore really scruffy clothes and his hair and beard grew long. Hair and beard were frizzy curls which he NEVER brushed or combed! It didn't suit him. Then came the shaved head with just a strip of hair down the centre. That really didn't suit him.

Now, although he still has hair, he's chosen to have it at stubble length. That doesn't suit him either. Wonder what will be next?

Jude

He cut off his dreadlocks ? WOW....I remember reading an article about Lenny Kravitz....when he cut off his dreads.....I recall it being a very life changing event for him. Like releasing a lot of stored energy and emotions. I pray this is a healing event for your son !! You might want to google it....

In any event.....continuing to pray for his growth into the beautiful man he is to become. And prayers for you sweetie !! xx
