I thought, it being February and all, that I would start a Valentines thread just because I believe in love...

Early History of Valentine's Day:
  • One thought is: The early origins of Valentine's Day can be traced back to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, which was held on February 15. The celebration of Lupercalia honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus and the founders of Rome.
  • Another thought is: There were two saints named Valentine and a priest a named Valentine. One saint was executed on February 14th and 227 years later, Pope Gelasius named February 14, Valentine's Day for him. The priest named Valentine disobeyed the Emperor and secretly married couples.
  • And another thought is: Birds and fowl select their mates on February 14th.

Modern History of Valentine's Day:
  • Began in France and England.
  • The first box of Valentine's candy was in the late 1800's.
  • The Duke of Orleans (a frenchman) sent the first Valentine, after being captured in 1415. He sent it on Valentine's Day to his wife.
  • "The oldest known greeting card in existence, is a Valentine card made in the 1400's and can be admired at the British Museum (London)."
  • Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's.

Symbols of Valentine's Day:
  • Cupid (The Roman God of Love)
  • Doves
  • Love Birds
  • Roses
  • Hearts
  • Arrows
  • Lacy Doilies

Facts About Valentine's Day:
  • Some of the countries that celebrate Valentine's Day:
    The United States
    Canada
    Mexico
    United Kingdom
    France
    Australia
  • Over 1 billion Valentine cards are sent in the U.S each year.
  • Over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year.

Observance of Valentine's Day:
  • A card sent to friends, mates and family members.
  • Flowers and/or candy to friends, mates and family members.
  • A special dinner.
  • Romantic getaway.

I would like to send a Valentine and some red roses to my mother. She passed years ago, but I still really miss her.

Mom,
I miss your warm smile and your easy laugh, your listening to my stories and the kind and helpful advice that followed, your can-do attitude that knew no bounds, your willingness to stand up for everything you believed in - even if it caused a stir, your delight in your home in the country and all it's natural beauty which you added to with flowering trees, shrubs and flowers, your pride in your Scottish heritage, and your unswerving devotion to the wonderful family you helped create and nurture. As the years go by, my memories of you become ever more precious. I will count as one of the very best blessings I have ever received to have you as my Mom, and as I got older, my most faithful friend. Happy Valentines Day, Mom! I love you with all my heart! Thank you for everything!

I hope you enjoy these Valentines cards and pictures as much as I enjoy finding them for all of you. May each of you know that I wish a little bright spot in your day (or night) so that Lynn and everyone who needs a little support can find it here. I hope each of you can feel your wonderfully unique specialness. Smile, God loves you!

I absolutely love this version of You Are So Beautiful. Billy Preston on Piano, Joe Cocker and Patti LaBelle on vocals. Patti is awesome! I think the words of this song are appropriate for Valentines day.

Patti Labelle & Joe Cocker-you are so beautiful 1985

You are so beautiful to me
You are so beautiful to me
Can't you see
Your everything I hoped for
Your everything I need
You are so beautiful to me

Such joy and happiness you bring
Such joy and happiness you bring
Like a dream
A guiding light that shines in the night
Heavens gift to me
You are so beautiful to me

Thankful One, Thank you for the beautiful flowers and interesting pictures of Valentine cards, as well as for the information on ValentineĀ“s Day. As you can see from the list of countries which celebrate it, Austria is not among them. Years ago it was no special day for us over here. Lately, however, it has become THE occasion for florists to sell flowers. That would not be bad in itself, if most of the flowers did not come from countries where they are produced under inhuman conditions. Moreover, they are flown thousands of miles to reach Europe. On the positive side, more and more florists are beginning to sell "fair trade"  and locally grown flowers.

As for cards, we have not adopted that tradition. I have had one Valentine card in my life, from (then) friends in the US. It reads, "Where Love is there God is". To me, it is a constant reminder to meditate on the nature of what is most important for all human beings - LOVE.

Wishing all of you what it says inside the card, "You are precious and you are loved. God bless and love you".

Juliana
