I just started a candle group for the Nokota horses. I hope it will be available soon, it said up to 15 minutes. Please light a candle to save the Nokota horses, they are the last of the native horses of the Northern Plains. Nokota Horse Conservancy

Do you mean is there a Candle Group, yes there is. The first link is for the conservancy and the Candle Group is NHC NHC Candles

This is of serious concern this year for the Nokota horses, they are experiencing a severe drought and they do not have enough hay for the horses this winter. I am concerned about their survival. The good people of the Nokota Horse Conservancy are doing everything in their power and with their limited time to find hay as far as 100 miles away, they cut it and have to haul it back to the horses. The drought is so severe that the state has issued them the right to cut on government land and what is called ditch hay, not the best, very dusty but it may mean the difference between starvation and survival. Buying hay is very expensive but necessary so funds are needed to be raised somehow to do that too. Plus fuel prices have increased to the point that it also hurts and takes money from the horse's needs.

Thank you for caring and asking about them. Please share this with your friends.

Please keep the Nokota Horse Conservany candles NHC lit. They are in a bad way, needing help due to the severe drought in North Dakota. The money isn't coming in to cover the cost of the hay as it's needed.

If anyone can help please go to Nokota Horse Conservancy and read the Drought Update on the left side of the page.

There are only 4 candles burning for the Nokota horses and they need help. Please visit the Nokota Horse Conservancy web site and read the Drought Update on the left of the screen and you will see why this is so urgent.

i have been to the nakota horse conservancy web site and it is very informative indeed.
they are trying and working so hard to provide adequate food for these horses, and
traveling great distances each day in search of hay from other counties because of the
drought and also wildfires that have wiped out the hay supply. i would urge all to visit
the site and send a donation of any denomination.every little bit helps.

djski you are so right, it is truly a gift. By the way, I share my birthdate with the Se/Treasurer of the Nokota Horse Conservancy so we always remember each other's birthday, LOL. I'm such a ditz about remembering dates but at least I can remember hers.

So I'm being pushy when I ask for the candles to be lit as a birthday present, I know, but it's just an excuse to get attention for the candles. I get tired of clicking ..continue, click here, etc. Perhaps today I can get someone else to light some.

How depressing, I just got word that they need hundreds of tons of hay to get through the winter. They are so far behind on hay, and they've been working so hard to get it in. This is just the basics for survival for these horses, this does not include shelter from the bitter winds. The only shelter they get is when it snows they build wind breaks with the snow with the tractor. Of course there are the butes too. My gosh, they have to have enough hay, I am so concerned about them. We're having a fund raiser for them Oct 27 & 28 in Chester County, PA. There is a lot of neat stuff they sell on the Nokota Horse Conservancy web site www.nokotahorse.org

You are so sweet, thank you. There are so many causes that deserve our attention and I believe God puts us where He wants us.

I have always loved animals and try to help them, and so that is my job, I have finally accepted it. I am grateful to all people who follow God's leading wherever that may be.

I do believe it was dj that turned me onto this plight of the Nokota Horses. They have my sincerest prayers and honest blessings to help them thru the winter. Horses are such beautiful majestic animals, even tho they scare me a little. lol But I will light a candle for them and add them also to our prayer list. You guys are all so wonderful and caring. I love the love that abounds thru this site. May we all get what we desire thru the kindness, love and care of everyone involved with this wonderful site. God Bless you all.
I love you, I wish I could do more. Lynn

I think this story is appropriate here, for those that care and help others, you should know there is a positive consequence for helping that you may never be aware of and for those people who only think of how things effect them this is also a warning. I believe this forum lends itself to people who help others so you would never know what would have happened if you didn't but please read this and share it.

Mouse Story

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. "What food might this contain?" The mouse wondered -he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning. "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow and said,"There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"

The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you,but it's no skin off my nose."

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap-- alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house --like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember --when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another
and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

Thanks, I loved that article. Margaret Odgers is a long time supporter and owner of Nokota horses. She's written extensively about them, just short pieces. This is one of her longer articles and I'm thrilled to see 2 photos I took in North Dakota, the handsome red roan stallion Snowy and the group of mares that were just released with him. You can't take a bad photo of these horses, every turn you make they are posing for you.

The Nokota horses are in trouble, they are thousands of tons short of hay for this winter. There was a severe drought this summer, once again and since the horses have always teetered on the brink of existance this year's drought is pushing them further towards extinction. Please share their story with everyone in hopes that somewhere they will get the final solution, a permanent sanctuary and a trust that will keep them into the future. Prayers are needed to guard them.
