Hello Everyone,
I have alot of phobias. But,there is one that has bothered
me since childhood. Escalators. Whenever we go to places
like shopping malls I'm afraid to use them. I fell down on one
when was I a small child. I prefer to take the elevator instead but that angers my parents or whoever else I'm
with. They don't understand the anxiety I feel. Sometimes
I starting shaking,sweating and I feel nauseauted .  One
time I got so nervous that I fell down in front of my
mom right before my parents tried to force on the
escalator with them. Is there anyway I can overcome
this fear. My parents say it's embarrassing for someone
my age to act this way,But I can't help it.

Hello Leanda. I sympathise with you about phobias. I have had a fear of heights, I have overcome by confronting it in a calm manner, deep breathing and being positive in thinking.

I have always had a fear of heights for many years since childhood. A friend had won tickets to a Monster Truck show from a radio show 15 years ago. I was excited to go. When we got there we were escorted to our seats. It was the highest point in the stadium. I started to panic climbing higher and higher. I sat in my seat and peeked out at the show eyes half closed. I kept telling myself this is foolish. My small boys were with me and I could not disappoint them. I opened my eyes and told myself it is alright despite the unreasonable fears I had. I started to relax and enjoy myself. Leaving going down the stairs to exit, it started to come back. I laughed outloud and walked carefully down, slightly dizzy from the height. When at the bottom of the stairs I reminded myself, this was very foolish to be afraid of heights and had overcome the fear after sitting for 3 hours at the highest point.

Years later I went to the Grand Canyon, and the fear of heights returned. As before, I used positive self talk, relaxed through deep breathing, and could look down at the highest point and enjoyed the scenery. It was a great vacation!

I have flown many times and places and have NEVER had a fear of flying ever. Strange isn't it?

Confront your fears with positive self talk, relax, and be careful.

God Bless
Marie

Leanda, eventually to get over it, you must do it.  But it can be helpful first to take it small steps, such as going someplace that has an escalator, and just watch it for awhile.  You don't have to get on it, just watch it, be near it, watch how people get on and off of it.  Keep coming back and doing this for as long as you need to before you try it yourself.  Either take a supportive friend, or do it alone, but not with someone who's trying to pressure you.  All the while, keep taking deep breaths and remind yourself that countless people ride escalators every day without incident.  It's easy to see how you got to this very fearful place.  But it sounds like you're ready to take the steps you need to take in order to move past it.  Good luck!

Dear Leanda,
I agree with everything Lori says here. I too have many phobias, but do make sure this one is a phobia.

For some people, (me included) falling over on escalators is to do with the balance mechanism in the inner ear. I can't stand up on one or on moving pavements. I also have trouble on boats because although my feet are safely on the ground, everything else is moving.

I sympathise with you. Just be firm with your parents and others. Remember, they are bound to be afraid of something themselves. Don't let them get you down. This is a problem for you and their reaction is not helpful.

I think standing near the escalator is a very good idea. I cured my fear of crossing bridges in just that way.

Jude
