Safe hands -> Tell it like it is (4/21/2008 11:20:02 AM)

I’m very fortunate to have two wonderful grandchildren. Everyone said how different it would be being a grandparent and I’m happy to say they were right.

I’m even more fortunate that they live locally and I get to see plenty of them. I often have the joy and privilege of putting them to bed.

These are special moments when sleepy hands and faces are washed, stories read and prayers said.

My three year old grandson has developed a delightful ritual as he snuggles down to sleep and asks me to talk to “baby Dedus”.

I ask him what he would like me to say and he meanders through a list of people and things that have filled his day that he wants me to mention. He simply tells it like it is. And whispers his own little Amen at the end.

These enchanting moments are so precious, not just to me but I suspect to the One who is always listening.

We are encouraged to come like children, to share our troubles, worries and concerns, to say thanks for the blessings we have had and to ask for the help we need.

Forget magic formulas. Forget good grammar. Forget the wish list. Just tell it like it is. We’re not talking to a cosmic Santa Claus but to someone who really cares and listens.

He’s as concerned with the thoughts of my three year old grandson’s heart as He is yours.

If you’ve never tried it, or you‘ve tried and given up, feel like your words are hitting the ceiling, try again. Just tell it like it is. You might be surprised at the response.

Thankful one -> RE: Tell it like it is (4/22/2008 3:25:13 AM)

Alice,
I really loved your post and how you described your relationship with your grandchildren.

I liked your description of the "One who is always listening" and find that analogy meaningful.

I too have found great spiritual insight from getting the blessed opportunity of being around little children.

I would have to say those experiences of doing the daily rituals of being alive and saying prayers with young children has been one of the greatest blessings and the greatest joys of my life.

I'd like to personally welcome you to the forum. Thanks for sharing!

Alice, welcome to the forum. Your grandson's reference to "baby Dedus" is priceless and makes me smile. What a very special blessing to know that he has such a real and personal relationship with the Holy One. Those moments of prayer truly sound like very precious moments that will always hold a very gifted place in your heart. We hope that you will continue to brighten our days with the wisdom of your grandson who has such a wise understanding of what real prayer is. Please come back often.

Alice
I love your grandma stories I too see my grandchildren daily all 5 of them and I do enjoy them and also enjoy my quiet time which is when I meditate and converse with God I was always feeling inadequate never knowing just the right way to pray and tell it like it is....not quite the kneel down and focus type until I learned meditation So when I saw Fiddler on the roof and the father character would look up and yell or talk to God saying "Hello God it's me Tev"and he would converse with God really resonated within me and that is what I do hello God it's me your child and say my name thanks for your post  and your insight we dont all have to talk to the one who is always lisening I know he does I have a portrait of Jesus over my office desk and the title is "The Listener"
Namaste
