My partner Julie's dad died yesterday morning. He was only 65, and died of hepatic encephalopathy, which is where the liver can no longer remove toxins like ammonia from the body and they build up in the brain until it finally shuts down. A lifetime of drinking, and continuing to drink, despite being told very clearly that if he didn't stop it would kill him. And it did, surprisingly quickly, in the end. Julie sat with him all night, and it was extraordinary to witness the love she felt for him, to feel it flow out from her. I'm absolutely sure it eased his journey, because when we arrived at the hospital he was very aggitated, with lots of jerking of his body, and crying out, but within an hour he had settled, and in the end his passing was as peaceful and gentle as one could hope for. So his last hours were filled with unconditional love, and his soul was washed clean by it. How blessed am I to have this beautiful person in my life.
