T.O. Magnificent churches are truly a point of gratitude. You might be interested in checkingCathedral Basilica of St. Louis

In 1912, installation of mosaics in the interior began. Completed in 1988, it contains 41.5 million glass tesserae pieces applying over 7,000 colors. Covering 83,000 square feet (8,000 m²), it is the largest mosaic collection in the world, and was created by 20 different artists including Hildreth Meiere.

Looking at these photos of churches leads me into a reverent feeling of worship and respect for the divine. Tens of millions in the world share this love for Christ, God or their chosen word or phrase for the same.

I believe that the majority of the most beautiful buildings in the world are churches. This may be a part of the human desire to express something mightier than themselves.

If you'll pardon the amendment, instead of just churches; if we include shrines, temples and other sacred places, we can safely say more than six billion souls in the world share a love for the devine (secretly or otherwise).

I'm sorry for the lack of clarification on the word "church". There is only room for so many words to describe a thread. My apologies if you or anyone else was offended in any way. I intend to show photos of all kinds of religious buildings.

If you go to the thread I started "I'm grateful for beauty...", you will see lots of photos of shrines and temples. I have also included many photos of natural places that are described as holy places by different groups around the world. I have been very inclusive on that thread and will be on this one as well.

Thanks for the reminder that wording is important. I can always use that.

I have a major dilemma. I certainly enjoy seeing the art in the churches, and I recognise that people have a powerful need to have a place to worship in.

But then I see images of churches with all their magnificence and pomp and power and money on display, and priests in their fine robes who never knew a day of hunger or want in their lives, many of whom have abused the people they are supposed to be caring for, if not directly then indirectly.

And often I also see hungry people living in poverty, who could have been fed and housed by the money the church cost to build and decorate.

And I see church organisations which directly promote ignorance and hatred and suffering, because it suits their purposes and their purses.

This is not confined to any one religion or sect, but I'd ask this: If Christ/Buddha/etc returned today which churches/temples/shrines would They see as being at one with Their teachings?

Joe, there is much truth in what you say, but, I believe, you underestimate the need for beauty. The soul needs feeding.

After World War II, the people of Vienna, Austria, wanted the heavily damaged St. Stephen's Cathedral and the burnt-out Opera House restored, willing to give money they might have used for food, even if it was just enough to buy one tile.
It is not a question of either/ or, but a balance in providing for material needs and those things that nourish the soul. There will always be a variety of opinions on this subject.

Yes, Jesus, Buddha and other religious founders might find much wrong today, but I am reminded of the story in St. John's Gospel where Mary anointed Jesus with costly perfume. Judas Iscariot felt that it should have been sold and the money given to the poor, but Jesus told him to leave her alone. "You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me." (John 12:8)
