...Buddhism looks for the basic cause of sin and suffering, and discovers this to be the belief in a self or ego as the centre of existence. This belief is caused not by innate evil, but by unconsciousness, or ignorance of the true nature of existence. Since we experience the whole of life from this falsely centralised viewpoint, we cannot know the world as it truly is. This is what is meant by saying that the world is unreal. The remedy is to see through the illusion, to attain the insight of emptiness - the absence of what is false. Inseparable from emptiness is the luminosity - the presence of what is real, the basic ground in which the play of life takes place... Nobody is going to save us, everything is left purely to the individual, the commitment to who we are. - (Guru Rinpoche, The Tibetan Book of the Dead) Modern science has all the knowledge necesary to eliminate most diseases, combat poverty and starvation, and generate an abundance of safe and renewable energy. We have sufficient resources and manpower to realize the wildest dreams humanity has ever had... Hundreds of millions of people are dying of starvation and disease, both of which could be remedied by the billions of dollars wasted annually on the insanity of the arms race... When we have the means and technological know-how for feeding the population of the planet, guaranteeing a reasonable standard of living for all, combating most diseases, reorienting industries to inexhaustible sources of energy, and preventing pollution, what prevents us from taking these positive steps?... ...These destructive and self-destructive elements in the present human condition directly reflect the alienation of modern humanity from itself and from spiritual life and values. - (Stanislav Grof, M.D., and Christina Grof, Spiritual Emergency: When Personal Transformation Becomes a Crisis) To have faith means to dare, to think the unthinkable, yet to act within the limits of the realistically possible...The situation of mankind today is too serious to listen to the demagogues - least of all to demagogues who are attracted to destruction - or even to the leaders who use only their brains and whose hearts have hardened. Critical and radical thought will only bear fruit when it is blended with the most precious quality man is endowed with - the love of life. -(Erich Fromm, The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness) It seems tolerably certain that with illumination there occurs actual, physical, molecular, rearrangement somewhere in the cerebral centres and that it is this molecular rearrangement which, when considerable and sudden, gives rise to the phenomenon of the subjective light...My physical body went through the experience of a disappearance in spiritual light. All severe lines in the front of phenomena relaxed. I was one with God, Love, the Universe, arrived at last face to face with myself...now I saw that no religion despairs - that all religion before it becomes and as soon as it ceases to be an affair of institutions resolves itself essentially into light and immortality. - (Richard Maurice Bucke, M.D., Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of the Human Mind)
