Richard, I, too, love St. Teresa's writings. The top part of the prayer you quoted was written by my father for me into a small book young girls used to have, where they would ask family and friends to write something of their choice. As a teenager I did not quite "get it", but life has taught me!
Thank you!

Richard:  I've not heard the first part of that post, but I love it.  It really reflects what I'm working on now, trying to be mindful more often of impermanence and how everything is in process.  I'm surprised that it's by Teresa of Avila, it sounds so much more "eastern," but she was a mystic so I shouldn't be so surprised.

The second part has been used by one of our ministers most Sundays as a benediction.  I've intended to ask her where it came from, because it has been so meaningful to me, but never got around to it.  Thank you so much for posting it.

Hugs,
Lori

What you need is wisdom, and not knowledge; for if one has wisdom, knowledge will come naturally. Always remember that the Eternal Tao is Infinite Wisdom, Infinite Love and Infinite Simplicity.

Richard, now this is something to ponder! It matters how we understand these words - wisdom, knowledge. I think of wisdom as the gift of using one's knowledge well, be it knowledge of the mind and the heart, knowledge gained through study as well as experience. Simplicity is the fruit of such wisdom.
Love holds it all together.

Edda;

Well put !!!  Lately, I've been trying to put my mind around epistemology; the classical examples sometimes tend to boggle one's mind.  I like the simplicity of your statement above.  Thank you for that.

Many people are afraid to empty their minds lest they plunge into the void. They do not know that their own mind is the void.

                                                                                                                           - Huang-po

And, on the subject of Impermenence:

By the roadside grew
A rose of Sharon.
My horse
Has just eaten it.

The way to true spirituality
Cannot depend upon others;
One instant of enlightenment
And I go beyond body and self.
The myriad and profound virtues
Are complete;
Anywhere in the universe
Is now my home.

In some ways, this reminds me of one that was on Daily Zen a few months back:

"Every day priests minutely examine the Dharma and endlessly chant complicated sutras.  They should learn how to read the love letters sent by the wind and rain, the snow and moon." -- Ikkyu (1394-1491)

I take both to mean that it's all about love, ultimate simplicity.

The poem about the "rose of Sharon" reminds me of a song by Mozart about a violet hoping to be plugged by a shepherdess, but instead ends up being stepped upon by her. Flowers teach us about transient beauty as they complete their life cycle.

Who's teaching whom?  I thought YOU were teaching ME!

Richard, a while back you posted something called "Holding the Constant."  I want you to know I have that on my desk and I read it every morning as I begin my work.  Thank you!!

We teach others how to treat us and we learn from every element in the universe.  Sharing with others is love.  When we give a gift it's essence is in the moment and then we give up each moment for the next.  Holding to the constant is from Lao Tze's Tao de Ching.  That particular translation I believe is Eknath Easwaren's.

By sharing with each other we not only show our love but we also can learn from each other.

Descartes had it wrong. He should have said;
"Sum Ergo Amo"

"When the waves of self will subside into the sea of peace that is the Self, The mind becomes still, the heart pure and illumination comes to us in this very life."

As long as you are subject
To a life bound by force of habit,
You are not free from the
Burden of the body.

Richard,

"The Word for the Day" on 2/29 was:
"I am therefore I thank" (Cindy Lubar Bishop), another improvement on Descartes!

I think as long as one is controlled by force of habit one is not free in any way!
