My hut isn’t quite six feet across
Surrounded by pine, bamboos, and mountains,
An old monk hardly has room for himself
Much less for a visiting cloud.

My thoughts this morning are included in a blog on Oprah's site

Richard, thank you for sharing your thoughts from Oprah's site with us. You had quite an experience, not well captured by psychiatry, that put you on a path of exploration, discovery and growth. Unusual experiences, disturbing at the time, can become profound sources for gratefulness.

Actually not disturbing but more fascinating.  It was awesome to experience the power of the mind.  Just imagine, you can be standing beside someone who is experiencing just such an abnormal swing and never know.  It gave me a tremendous respecr for our internal space; literally the last frontier.

Richard, I appreciate reading your blog today.  What a powerful experience.  I frequently ask my patients to think of their illnesses as gifts, and to explore what insights and opportunities are being brought to them from their psychiatric illnesses.  Thank you so much for sharing your story.

And thanks for putting "Lori from Kansas" in such good company (Eckhart Tolle, Gandhi, Desmond Tutu).

Hugs,
Lori

Lori;

Your welcome, sorry about missing your state by a few. I considered the experience to be  a gift.  I learned alot from it even though it was viewed as an embarassment by some.

Every day priests minutely
examine the Dharma
and endlessly chant
complicated sutras.
They should learn
how to read the love letters
sent by the wind and rain,
the snow and moon.

Once again, I'd like to share some thoughts with you that I have posted to Oprah's Discussion Board

Richard, how true! It may be admirable to be faithful to the rituals and observance of one's tradition, but they may become a "security blanket" and deprive us of the freedom to be open to the beauty and goodness around us.

In a way you blog addresses a related issue, religion becoming a set of beliefs, rituals and rules while losing its life-giving spirit.

Richard, that's one of my favorites.  I wrote it on the first page of my journal before I went on my retreat.

I can't read your blog tonight, Oprah's having some live web event so the blogs are preempted.  But I will read it soon.

Oprah's live web event is a course in awakening your life's purpose through the reading of Ekhart Tolle's book "A New Eartth."  We are in the fourth week of a ten week session.  Each week one of ten chapters are reviewed.  It's on Monday nights at 9:00 edt / 8 central. Last night's discussion was on role playing; the many faces of the ego.  As you will see when you get to view Karen Armstrong's talk, we must put aside the ego to know who we are.  Be still and know ....

Edda;  Thank you for pointing out the similarity, as stated by Ms.Armstrong;
"Religion isn’t about believing things. It’s ethical alchemy. It’s about behaving in a way that changes you, that gives you intimations of holiness and sacredness.
We need to create a new narrative, get out of the rat-run of hatred, chauvinism and defensiveness; and make the authentic voice of religion a power in the world that is conducive to peace. People want to be religious, we should act to help make religion a force for harmony."

Jude;   Too true, it is a beautiful word image.

Lori;  The sentiments above are the essence of the blog.  however, it is still worthwhile to listen to Karen speak the words.

gassho to you all, rj

Lost, a poem

This is the poem Oprah read during the Chapter 5 webcast.
David Wagoner is an award-winning poet and novelist.

Did anyone look at the moon this morning??

Sentient beings are really Buddha.
Like water and ice;
Apart from water, no ice;
Outside of sentient beings, no Buddha.
Not knowing it is near
They seek for it afar!
Just like being in water,
But crying for thirst!

- Hakuin

Richard, if I try to put this into words that convey my own beliefs, I would say, "God is within me, and I am in God." I don't know how close I come, but this is what comes to my mind reading the poem.

Hi Richard,

Sorry I missed your birthday! Will you accept my belated wishes for many happy returns of the day?

the rich long for heaven,
but the wise long for a state of tranquility.

Do not sweep the fallen leaves,
For they are pleasant to hear on clear nights
In the wind, they rustle, as if sighing;
In the moonlight, their shadows flutter.
They knock on the window to wake a traveler;
Covering stairs, they hide moss.
Sad, the sight of them getting wet in the rain;
Let them wither away deep in the mountains.

Richard,

This would have been good to read the other day as I tried to clear away an accumulation of old, wet leaves behind the house. There is so much more "life" in them in fall!

Did you leave the Latin for me?!
"Light and truth"
"The sun shines for all."
"So passes the glory of the world."
