Dear Friends, We are indebted to participants in our April 14th "Art of Gratefulness" workshop for these fresh insights about gratefulness practice, here paraphrased: Suzanne: Listen to someone who's going through a hard time; it can teach you a lot about your own path. Janice: Try to show gratefulness to people who are strangers, treating them with real human kindness. An open question to a cashier at the store, for instance, like "So how's your day going?" often gets a surprisingly warm response. Kathy: Working with pre-schoolers -- when it's February and everyone starts to get stir crazy -- i sometimes bring a basin of water and wash the children's feet, drying them and giving a little foot massage with lotion. This act radically changes for the better the mood in the room. Foot washing helps us all remember that i'm not superior to them. I may be bigger than they are, but I am not necessarily wiser! Also it helps to breathe in difficulties, breathe out gratefulness. Eileen: When you pay a bill, think of it as an appreciation note for the thing or service provided...and for yourself, that you allowed that into your life. Even something you didn't want in the first place, like a doctor's bill, may allow you to attend to facets of life you didn't know existed. With gratefulness to all who joined us for the workshop, Patricia and Margaret
