How quietly the earth breathes forth new life.
How eagerly the sun bleeds forth the spring.

I AM LISTENING

I am listening to seeds breaking open,
to roots growing strong beneath the ground,
to green shoots rising up from winter wombs.
I am listening to thorns blossoming,
to barren branches laughing out new growth,
to wildflowers dancing through the meadows.

I AM LISTENING

I am listening to the forest filling up with song.
I am listening to the earth filling up with life.
I am listening to trees filling up with leaves.

I AM LISTENING

I am listening to the rain drops
giving hope to thirsty gardens.
I am listening to the orchards
pregnant with new life.
I am listening to the flowers
bursting forth in rainbow colors.

I AM LISTENING

I am listening to the growing
in the garden of my heart.
I am listening to my heart
singing songs of resurrection.
I am listening to the colors of life.

I AM LISTENING

(from a poem by Macrina Wiederkehr)

May we all "Listen" to the new life bubbling forth from within and all around us.

Thank you. It feels good to hear sounds that don't hurt the ears so much; it seems there's always a way for the 'angry noise' to get attention, but it's good to ignore it every now and then....

Dear Amy,

Welcome and BRAVO!!!! I just read you post on "Gratefulness in Business" and I wanted to applaud. There are several businesses that are supported through micro loans that I am involved with through "Kiva". PLEASE, let us all know when "soon to be PhD" becomes official PhD. It brings forth such a sense of gratitude and hope to know that there are women out there who are so positively attempting to change the world.

Please come back often and know that you are in our hearts and prayers. When things get difficult, long slow deep breaths with the mantra "sustain me God" remind us that we are never alone in such endeavors. "Someone" walks beside us and will truly sustain and guide us.

Dear Judyann,

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for taking the time to post. I just read your post sitting in front of my computer, looking out the window and watching firey, iridescent, peneatrating orange provide a backdrop of little jagged intervals of vividness between the dark branches of forest green leaves. Watching the trees slowly become darkened masses as the sun quietly decends in the twilight sky brings peace. How much we are loved by our God who created such beauty and wonder for the home in which we dwell. May your love of our God's created beauty always bring you to God's peace.

“BEING” IN SUMMER

Heat fills the air too heavy to breathe;
Concrete and asphalt boil and seethe.

Crackling thunder, torrential rain;
The air is bathed and scrubbed again.

Fields and trees full of fruits and berries;
Bumble bees; lady bugs; butterfly fairies.

Fireflies glow in the evening sky,
While cicadas chant their lullaby.

The still of night, no whisper, no breeze,
As moon light dances round thru the trees.

The shadows come, the darkness grows;
The nighttime blankets highs and lows.

Too soon this summer has come and gone,
Nights stretching longer, delaying the dawn.

Though never may I know Your reasons,
For gifting me with changing seasons,

In gratitude toward You I turn;
With grateful heart, for You I yearn.

Thanks for guiding me to this page, Imenuff (I didn´t DOUBLE-klick, that was it!) I thoroughly appreciate the two poems, especially as English is not my mother tongue. Living in the mountains of the Tyrol in Austria, I am grateful today for the impressive mountain scenery beneath a fierce blue sky. People come here from far away to enjoy it, and I have the privilege of living here. Thank you.

I am so pleased the directions were adequate. Now you will be able to post anytime you so desire or just read the other posts. Your description of where you live brought peace and calm. In my mind's eye, I could almost visualize the fierce blueness of the sky with tall stately mountains standing as its vigilant earthly guards, the kind of place pictured in fairy tails. Please remind us often of all those unimaginable precious gems of creation that our world has been gifted with. May its beauty surround and enfold you with it's peace and splendor.

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round; or listened to rain slapping the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight, or gazed at the sun fading into the night?

You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last.

Running through your days on the fly, asking how are you...never hearing a reply?
When the day is done do you lie in your bed, the next hundred chores running through your head?

You'd better slow down don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last.

Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow; and in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die? Just didn't have time to call and say,"Hi"

You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last.

When you run so fast to arrive somewhere you miss the fun of journeying there.
When you worry and hurry all through your day, It's an unopened gift you've just thrown away.

Life is not a race. Do take it slower. Listen to its music BEFORE THE SONG IS OVER.

This is SOOOO true.  I'm grateful that, these days, I really feel this a lot more than I used to, and live it a lot more than I used to (still not 100%, but working on it).  Unfortunately, I had to get old to "get it."

COME LISTEN

...with me to
hear God speaking
in the beauty and
power of nature,
and in the humble things
filling everyday life,
which flows in
a well-rehearsed
rhythm, predictable
but often interrupted
with surprises and
unexpected turns
that give each day
newness, and suggest
fresh possibilities,
inviting us to
observe more closely,
look more deeply,
and listen more
attentively with the
ears of the heart to
that "still, small voice"
which Elijah heard,
and is still speaking
to those willing
    to listen.

Edda and Betty:  I love both of your poems.  I've emailed them to myself at work to keep as handy reminders of my intentions to slow down and to listen.  Edda, I especially liked the reference to that "still, small voice."  That was such a meaningful passage to me once upon a time, and I forgot about it.  It's so nice to encounter it again.

Reading the posts on this thread, I am reminded of a story which is one of my favorites. Let me share it with you.
A man, whose marriage wasn´t going well, went to see a spiritual master, asking his advice.
The master told him to go home and listen to every single word that his wife would say. The man took the advice to heart. He came back after a month, reporting that he had learned to listen to each word of his wife.
With a smile, the master said to him, "Now go back home and listen to every word she does not say."

Lovely are the silent woods
of this new Autumn’s days,
When leaves of yellow, red and gold
Fall on the quiet ways,
From massive beech, majestic oak
and birches white and slim,
A cathedral’s pillared isles appear
so long and vast and dim.

Drifting mist as curling incense
hangs upon the air--
Along the paths where birds once sang
The trees now stripped & bare,
Making Gothic arches
their branches interlaced,
And window framing vistas,
richly wrought and finely traced.

In such a place
on such a day--
Problems almost vanish,
As sorrows steal away;
The woods of one more Autumn
Grow silent and austere,
As Nature bows and blesses
another passing year.
