When you are all alone...        Do you often seek the company of another?

If so, that means you are:
1. Craving for company
2. Have Aversion to loneliness
3. Ignorant of 1. and 2.

When alone, learn to be at one with yourself and the world;
don't be the loneliest one in the world.
You are complete,
you are whole.

Celebrate your wholeness

gassho,

Yes, there is a big difference between loneliness and being alone! While feelings of loneliness will come up from time to time, learning to be alone with oneself is so important for being at peace.

I am always talking to and seeking guidance from God, so I'm rarely lonely since at least He's with me. I agree with Edda that one can feel lonely from time to time (especially on some holidays) but I believe one is never truly alone. Even the flowers in the garden make for good company.

Always go to God in prayer when you feel alone.  He is always with you.  You are never alone...

I think today's prayer on Beliefnet is worth sharing

Prayer for the Courage to Look Within

May all sentient beings have the courage to look within themselves and see the good and bad that exists in all of us. May we open our hearts, shining the light of love into the dark recesses where doubt and fear reside. May we have the courage to step into that light and embrace whatever we find, letting it rise to the surface freed by the act of loving kindness.

Welcome to the forum, Joan! You are right, we are never truly alone, but there are those dark or dry times when we know that God is with us, within us, but this Presence is not felt. Being at peace at those times is not easy.
Wishing you everything good,
Edda

Thank you for this prayer, Richard! It is one, I believe, anyone can pray regardless of their tradition.
I also thank you for your candles in support of Leon and myself. All this positive energy is truly helpful.
With every good wish,
Edda

Be quiet, look within and enjoy the healing power of silence.
Remember that your life is intimately connected with all other life.
Pay attention and concentrate on your breath.
Let peace and happiness prevail and spread through you.

When I point my finger at the moon, my dog looks at my finger, not the moon. He doesn't see beyond my finger. He only needs to see where my finger leads to to see the moon. But he misses it. So close yet so far away! This is the proven Zen analogy; the finger is the Scriptures and Teachings that point to the Truth. The finger is just a guide. The finger is not the moon. The teachings are not the Truth, they are about the Truth. I think there is a little bit of dog in each of us, dancing around the finger. Being "played" by the finger, by our own ignorance and attachment to words; all the while missing the real thing . Be freed by the scriptures, not trapped by them.

This is a great analogy. It is so easy to get attached to a particular teacher, certain methods, special readings, forgetting that they are all meant to point beyond to Truth. And it is important not to get in the way of other seekers.

Being different is not a problem; it's just being different.
But feeling different is a problem. When you feel different,
the feeling can actually change the way you see the world.

Be still and know that you are not alone

Richard, I might add that being different is not a problem, when you accept yourself. Others may not do so and make you feel different, provided you give them the power to do so. Then you will see the world differently. All this is easier said than done!

The key of course, is to not let others determine your feelings.
Be your own person.
Be still and you will know

If I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Yes, it is all about love! Without it everything else is of little account. It is the kind of love Paul talks about in his letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 13). This is the reading Brother David used at the Parliament for World Religions in 1993, when representatives of different traditions were invited to offer a reading. It is universal, not depending on any specific tradition.

Edda;

You remind me; two years ago I visited Ephesus and stood on the spot where Paul incited Early Christians to riot.  What an awesome experience.  The ruins speak to you from two thousand years away.  Similarly, the Palace at Knosis, the temples of Kyoto or the pyramids of Egypt can move your perception.  What a beautiful world we share. How can one feel lonely, I have yet to visit Stonehenge.

Did you know the population of Ephesus was decimated by the mosquito;  perhaps the world's first malaria epidemic ??

Richard, I have not been so fortunate to have visited these places. It must be quite awesome! No, I did not know about the mosquitos in Ephesus. I have been to many old cathedrals and churches in Europe where you can almost hear the song and prayers of centuries and feel surrounded by all who have been there!

Edda;

Travel falls within this thread if you are grounded, you feel at home wherever you find yourself.  There is never any reason to be lonely.  My European experience has only been overnight stays in Paris, Rome, Berlin, Zurich and Copenhagen; when I was traveling for work in the middle east.  It is amazing how much exploration of culture can be crammed into such short stays though.
Having seen the various ways in which people manage to survive in various cultures and economic situations, one realizes how similar we all are.  From causing an Egyptian to weep over my understanding of his concept of Allah to the warm response of a Japanese acqauintance to my recitation of the Heart Sutra in his language; if you only try to understand another's viewpoint, the human connection is unbeatable.  The Japanese showed much concern for us when we were fortunate to be included in a company trip to Australia and New Zealand.  I told them not to worry, we speak Australian.
The awesome feeling derived from ancient and sacred archetecture is to me, a function of one's depth of compassion.  The feeling of love and equanimity toward fellow human is more real.  I asked a Japanese translator what the basis of harmony was.  She asked if she could think about the question.  Two or three days later she responded, "Tolerance."

gassho, rj

The following is an excerpt from 'The Art of Happiness' website

a practical approach to human happiness

There are many facets to leading a happy life. It begins by understanding the true and legitimate sources of happiness.

Happiness is our birthright as human beings. There is no doubt that life can be difficult—living in today’s world is not always easy. But despite life’s inevitable problems and challenges, genuine happiness is still possible.

The Art of Happiness is based on a few basic premises:
-
The purpose of life is happiness
- Happiness is determined more by the state of one’s mind than by one’s external conditions, circumstances, or events—at least once one’s basic survival needs are met
- Happiness can be achieved through the systematic training of our hearts and minds, through reshaping our attitudes and outlook
- The key to happiness is in our own hands
