Status: offline 		Who would like to join us in Washington DC?  We are planning 3 days, 2 nights in Washington. 
Day 1 June 19th, register as a citizen against horse slaughter, get information, our schedule for the 3 days.
Day 2  June 20th, go to the Congressional offices prepared to meet your Congressmen and maybe help deliver letters to other Congressmen for people who have sent them to hand out personally.
Day 3, June 21st, summarize our trip and hold a press conference, and go home and rest.

Status: offline 		We gained new cosponsors to the legislation HR 503 and hope to gain more on S. 311 soon.  I believe our trip was successful but wish we didn't need to return soon.  3 new cosponsors just signed on in the House.  The bill is called the Horse Protection Act.  It would help if people would call their Congressmen and ask them to cosponsor this bill and if they are already cosponsor please thank them.

Status: offline 		Dear Susan: Is there a site that would list where all our senators and congressmen stand on this issue. I would like to help out and apologize for not doing so sooner. I tend to concentrate on praying for people, but I now realize our animal friends need us too. And I thank you for having opened my eyes to this cause.

Status: offline 		A victory at last, a court decision that  stopped the slaughter of horses for now!  Prayers work, keep praying!  This will be challenged by the slaughterhouse.

They were caught in their lies.

Status: offline 		Thank you for your continued prayers.  If you ever want an update you can just email me, we will go to Washington again and do what we can to get their support to save the horses.  It's just not right that animals be abused and mistreated for the pleasure of a few humans.  The slaughter of all animals is not well regulated, the system needs to improve, it's so bad, people just don't know how much animals for food suffer.  The things chickens in factories go through just so we can get eggs is awful and unecessary.  We can and should do better by them, a more natural old life style.  Grazing animals need to be outside grazing, live longer, chickens should get some fresh air and sunshine, we all get sick because of how these farm animals are treated.

But horses were never meant to be for food, they are pets like cats and dogs and we have taught them to trust and obey us.  This is unique among animals, more like a dog, we teach them to work, to love and respect us and they do.  I get lots of affection from my horses, they push each other out of the way to be close to me then they do something I taught them that's not so wise of me.  They push their big butts to me so I would scratch it, LOL, it looks pretty funny actually.  As I am filling their water tanks I feel the gentle nudge of a big butt swaying side to side just begging for my fingernails to give it a good scratch.

Status: offline 		I like your horse story. My mother was quite the equestrian when she was young, but I have had a couple of bad experiences with horses and tend to be a bit afraid of them. My mother tells me my fear is unfounded.

I understand your fear, I am afraid of heights and falling yet when I got up on a horse I never was afraid of falling or of being that high as I would have if I were on a ladder of equal height.  But I know that you can come off a horse and the landing are more of a concern now than ever at age 54.  I don't have a quiet horse that is big enough or young enough to carry me at this time.  I'm more comfortable with them on the ground but realize that you have to keep your wits about you since if something makes them run they move first and look second.  My 4 horses would never intentionally hurt me, you can tell they just can't get enough of being with me and enjoy my company.  They are free not to come and always approach me when I arrive in the pasture.  It's very difficult to cuddle with more than 2 at a time but I have sometimes had to try, LOL, kiss the middle nose while hugging the other two. 

In my opinion the best way to alleviate any fear is to face it.  You go to it, don't leave it and a pleasant and kind horse will help a great deal to alleviate much of your fear, start on the opposite side of a fence (beware of an electric fence) and just talk to the horse that comes to you and gently pet the willing horse.  Make sure you ask the owner first, some horses seem friendly but bite.  Mine would never hurt you intentionally but any horse may go for a treat thinking you have one in your hand so I like to show their eye that I have an empty hand.  They can't see at the mouth what's in your hand, it's far from their vision.  I found it helps them to not expect a treat.

Maybe someday you'll take up with a nearly bombproof horse that will show you again how wonderful they can be.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the additional information. We've moved out to a rural area outside of Houston, TX, and I might just end up meeting a horse one of these days. I remember I had a girlfriend in high school who had a horse and she adviced me to tuck my thumb in when feeding a horse or it might accidentally bite me.

My mother is 81 going on 82 and I told her your story of the horses wanting their behind scratched, and she loved it. She told me she wanted a horse, although we can't have one and she couldn't ride it. Who knows what the future could bring, though. She only wants one as a pet. Loves them.

Status: offline 		I would love to send you a photo of my Mom at age 84 with my untamed horse, she loved that she could tell him what to do and he DID IT!  It was adorable the way he was so sweet with her.  He was not tame but he was friendly.  My email address is with AOL and it's Barnmom45 so you can put that together and I'll send you the photo.

Status: offline 		Thank you all for caring about the welfare of horses, I know this is a very limited issue but I'm taking them one at a time, LOL. 
I do have forums for this issue if anyone wants to read them and there is a place to reach your Congressmen, sorry, I couldn't get to that before.
http://thomas.loc.gov/  from here you can really navigate for a lot of information, the bill numbers are S 311 and HR 503 and you can read who all the cosponsors are for each bill.  On the left side bar you can go to find your Representatives or Senators.  It helps to spend time in this web site to learn it well but play around and you'll find most of what you want or need.  This is good information no matter what your issue is.  You can be an advocate for anything that's important to you.
