Julianna, thank you. The simplicity of the song/poem is part of it's beauty.

Shouda, woulda, coulda; the three horsemen of useless thinking.  There is nothing we can do about the past except lament. Action to repair a mis-step/take happens 'now'

and, Doing something about it tomorrow (the O'hara school of management) doesn't work either.

Right Now is all we have; Covet nothing, all belongs to the universe.  Be still, Accept and Enjoy.

(don't you just love it when someone sounds like thay know what's happening ??)

Do difficult people really exist, or is it just that we perceive them as such?

Richard that's a beautiful poem!. I'm impressed that you memorized it in a day!!!!

I remember having to learn 'Autumn' for my school exams, but would only be able to repeat a line and a half today.  J

China, I just saw the quote you posted on another forum and thought it very valuable. Hope you don't mind that I am posting it here.
quote:

If man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away........
Henry David Thoreau

I'menuff-love that statement. Have never heard it before. One step at a time, amazing, that's how I try to live my life. Don't do it perfectly, but sure work on it. As a member of a 12 step program, the first step is the one that I can do perfectly-I just have to remember that I am powerless and that my life can be unmanageable if I let it.

Can I ask prayers from everyone? A friend is having open heart surgery, today. His name is George. Please include him in your thoughts for the next few days. Thanks

Also, my husband lost his job a couple of weeks ago. If you could say a little prayer for him, I would appreciate it. His name is Dale.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Lyla

Dear Lylan,

I will be glad to keep Dale and George in my prayers, another opportunity for your husband, and healing for George!

Love,  Edda

Thank you, Edda, for your prayers. George came out of surgery and appears on the road to recovery. Now, for my husband......

We went to a fund raising dinner for the local literacy program in our area. I am an adult reading tutor, and recieve such joy from it. One of the tutors brought her student with her. He is a 63 year old man who decided it was time to learn how to read. He spoke to the audience about how proud he was to be able to take a list to the grocery store and be able to read it and buy everything on the list. I spoke to him briefly before everything got cranking. I am always interested in what motivates a person to start learning to read. He said-and I love this-"First, I had to let go of pride." So profound!! Pride holds people back from so many things. I know for myself, it has stopped me from accompishing so much in life. The 12 step program I attend calls it "false pride". I will suffer with some problem to the point of wanting to take it out on everyone around me, when all I have to do is talk to someone and ask for help with the problem.

My new thought for the day-letting go of pride.

Lyla

Prayers went your way and continue for George and his recovery. Special ones will go out for your husband. I have a Jewish friend who goes to temple etc., but always tells everyone that her "patron saint" is St. Anthony, patron of those who need help finding something lost. She, too, is pounding on the door of her "patron Saint" to help your husband find a new job.

quote:

He said-and I love this-"First, I had to let go of pride."
. My two most favorite quotes from Scripture are "Pride is the Root of all Evil," and "The Truth will Set You Free." It must be so rewarding to work with these individuals and share the joy that fills their lives when they can do the simple things that we so often take for granted. I know you are a very special gift and real joy to all of them.
May you be blessed with the presence of others as freely as others are blessed by your presence.

Thanks for the prayers, I'menuff. Tell your Jewish friend that St Anthony is one of my favorites.

The gift of literacy is something that goes both ways. I recieve just as much or more from my student. She is a developmentally disabled adult who heard people tell her she "Can't learn to do that" all her life.

I get so angry when people assume that someone "can't" do something because of some disability. Everyone should be given a chance at whatever it is they want. If they can't do it, at least they tried! My husband is a good example of that. He has cerebral palsy, it affects his left hand and leg. He always wanted to be a truck driver, but was told by the powers that be that he couldn't because of his hand. Well, he proved them wrong and got his CDL and works as a truck driver. He let people tell him for years that he couldn't and then someone told him he should at least try. Now, if he could just find a job! He is out with a friend today, that knows a few people who might be able to hire him. so, fingers crossed he'll get something, today.

Love, Lyla

Alexander Graham Bell said:
quote:

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.

It's a simple thought, really, but finding that quote tonight brought comfort at a time when I'm grieving the closing of a door in my life.  I realize that I've stared at the closed door long enough and it's time to watch for the one that is opening!

May we all watch for the new opportunities that are all around us!

Love,
Lolly

I like to think that the new door isn't opened - it's already open. I'm just too busy looking through the first door that I don't notice the second. Or something like that.

Lyla, We are still praying for your husband's new job. Please let us know when he finds one. So often we all buy into others' opinions of what we are and aren't capable of. As with your husband, when the encouragement is there, more can be accomplished than ever thought possible.

Lolly, Thank you for the quote. It is a good reminder. The insecurity of one door being closed before we see the other one that has opened is always difficult. Prayers go with you for finding that new unseen door that is already opened

Thank you, Betty, for all your kindnesses and especially for your prayers.   I'm finding myself gradually strengthening and becoming ready for new opportunities.  I don't think it's merely a coincidence that I'm feeling better just since I've found the Gratefulness forums and met so many wonderful people.

Solomon, I think I know what you mean.  Sometimes it's difficult to know whether the second door was always open and we just didn't see it -- or whether the first door had to close before the second one swung open -- or whether we sometimes just have to push more doors open ourselves!

Just today my daughter used my own words to make a point with me (I do so hate it when that happens!)  When she was faced with decisions about college, I had once told her that I didn't "raise her" to slam a door shut before she had peaked inside to see what she might be missing.

Today I'm grateful for her reminder and for the realization that we need to heed our own advice!

Love,
Lolly

. A LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG time ago, a dear friend once told me that you really have to be careful what you try to teach your kids. They just may learn it!!! Sounds like yours have learned it as well as mine.

Prayers and hugs

Betty, your friend was very wise!  Not only does my daughter look just like I did 20 years ago, she sounds just like me and acts just like me.  Worse yet, my own mother complains that the "mold wasn't broken" when I was born.  But my very kind son-in-law told me recently that if his wife turns out to be just like me, he'll be a happy guy!  (He's either very kind or very shrewd!!)

I think the best way to relive our youth is to see ourselves in our children.

Prayers, love, and hugs to you too, Dear Friend.

Love,
Lolly
