However deep your
Knowledge of the scriptures,
It is no more than a strand of hair
In the vastness of space;
However important seeming
Your worldly experience,
It is but a drop of water in a deep ravine.

                - Tokusan

Be the change you want to see in this world.
Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

                                                                               - Gandhi

We should all from time to time, meditate on our own self importance;

Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed.
Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.

Dear Richard, thank you!

Each one of us is unique, but we are one among many.

I think life needs to be of one piece and not divided into spiritual, work, family, public and private, and any other lives. We tend to apply different standards to the various aspects of our lives. Consistency throughout would help us aim at the harmony referred to in the quote above.

Many good wishes,  Edda

The Way of heaven is silent,
It has no appearance, no pattern.
It is so vast that its
Limit cannot be reached;
It is so deep that it
Cannot be fathomed.
It is always evolving
Along with people,
But knowledge cannot grasp it.
It turns like a wheel,
Beginninglessly and endlessly,
Effective as a spirit.
Open and empty,
It goes along with the flow,
Always coming afterward
And never in the forefront

- Lao- tzu

Alone in mountain fastness,
Dozing by the window.
No mere talk uncovers Truth:
The fragrance of those garden plums!

- Bankei (1622–1693)

A man who says ‘I know’ is the most destructive human being because he really does not know. What does he know? Thank you, Richard for your wisdom posts! Much to ponder! One point jumps out at me - selfconsciously watching oneself is counterproductive. One can't schedule spiritual growth. Strive to grow in love and compassion. Concentrate on living fully in the present moment, open to what it brings, and let whatever happens within happen.

Zen Vows

Though the many beings are numberless,
I vow to save them.
Though greed, hatred, and ignorance rise endlessly,
I vow to cut them off.
Though the Dharma is vast and fathomless,
I vow to understand it.
Though Buddha's Way is beyond attainment,
I vow to embody it fully.

Life's Journey

No one else can take the journey for you.
Learn to use the compass which is your birthright.
Accept what is without emotion.
It is your thought that bothers you,
Not what happened.

For all the sounds that stimulate the ears,
Rainfall has to be the ultimate.
Without imagining a raindrops destiny,
Does it make a sound passing through space.

Enjoy thusness,
The present moment is all we have.
Awareness deshrouds meaning.
Nothing has meaning except what you give it;
Happiness comes from thusness.

keep on working with the silence, rj

Repeated bouts of adversity are an unavoidable aspect of human existence. We battle against our inner struggles or outer world forces, and in many cases, we emerge on the opposite side of struggle stronger and better equipped to cope with the challenges yet to come. However,  (read More)

Dilemma

As I climb the stairs
A Turkish carpet increases before me.
It appears a waste to cast light,
As I have viewed it times before.

But, what if the hanging has faded,
Or the fringe unravelled.
It would be more shameful
To disregard the condition of my treasure.

But, what ifs don't reveal happiness.
Ecology or not, this is a world of impermanence.
Did Robbie's wee beastie,
Take time to examine his intentions.

I never saw a purple cow,
That didn't eat purple grass.
Even though only an egg plant
Should be that.

Spinoza wrote, "The more clearly you understand
Yourself and your emotions,
The more you become a lover of What is."
Accept the moment and climb the stairs.

Richard, I have been trying to accept What is with a certain measure of serenity for the past four months! I have not quite come to the point of becoming a lover of it, but I am not sure how Spinoza defined love!

Yesterday I watched Tiger Woods win the PGA Championship for the umpteenth time.  They say he is totally in the present moment when he makes a shot. He appears to be and have total concentration and is very successful at his craft but, is he happy?  How much compassion for his fellow beings is evident in his demeanour.  One can be totally in the moment and have near complete control of the outcome but, does it count towards harmony in the universe?

Being in the present moment and competing for the top prize are admirable but, does it really contribute to the sanctity of life?

"The rain has stopped,
The clouds have drifted away,
And the weather is clear again.

If your heart is pure,
Then all things in your world are pure.
Abandon this fleeting world,

Abandon yourself,
Then the moon and flowers will guide you along the Way."

Richard,

I'm not a golfer and know little about Tiger Woods, but I just loved that poem.

Thank you    J

Richard, I've had some of the same thoughts before as I watch Tiger play.  It appears to me that part of what makes him successful is that he seems to have a relationship with the ball itself.  At times he seems to talk to it, or silently communicate with it.  He seems to kinda' become one with the ball.  (I'm trying this myself lately with some success.  And yes, yesterday I got to see it in person!  Lucky me!)

I also wonder if he's happy.  He doesn't always seem happy, maybe because he's totally focused, or maybe because the spotlight gets too bright sometimes.  I also got to see yesterday how many people were following him and how the media doesn't leave him alone.  I don't know how he does it, for me this would be a very heavy burden to bear.

I don't have an answer for whether or not it contributes to the harmony of the universe.  I agree with you in questionning whether competing for the top prize is a worthy pursuit.   But as a golfer, I find it a thing of beauty to watch him play, even though I haven't always "liked" him (in the sense of being a fan of his, vs. a fan of somebody else).  I don't know what it is, but it's something beyond just having excellent skills.  I just feel a sense of awe.  I can't explain it.  It's a mystery.  Whether it's for good or ill, I guess time might tell.  (Or might not.)

I also loved the poem.  I'm really glad you shared.  Your posts always give me much to think and meditate on.

Lori

Very true, I am not arguing whether he is a good, great or fantastic phenomenon.  I too have attempted to golf and can relate to the excellence of his performance.  I enjoy watching his golfing but not his scowling.  I just wonder if the atmosphere he creates for his opponents is necessary to his success. Wouldn't you agree that Steve Ames would have been better off playing by himself yesterday?

Absolutely, he would have been better off if he didn't have to play with Tiger, whether that's because of Tiger's scowling or the circus that tends to surround him, or both.  My heart really went out to Steve Ames.

I have wondered if Tiger's "mystique" contributes to his success, if the perception that he's so far beyond everyone else plays a role in making it so.  I hadn't considered the possibility that his scowl creates a negative atmosphere, either purposefully or not, that intimidates his opponents into losing, which I think is what you're saying (not sure if you're saying it's intentional?).  He's so intense, it's very possible.  And that would be very sad.  I think that what you're referring to is at least part of the reason I haven't always "liked" him as a fan, and I don't really consider myself a fan, exactly, even now.  But when I watch him take a swing, it takes my breath away.  Maybe fatherhood will soften him a bit, which I agree would be a good thing.

L.

I don't think it is intentional at all.  I think it is just that he has been brought up to be so into his thing that he has no concern for those about him.  I agee, his technical performance is superb and it is hard not to follow him.

By the way, was that a llittle hot yesterday ?? Luckey Lori !!

HAAA!!!  Yes, it was a little warm, thank you for asking!

And regardless of the heat, yes, I DO feel lucky!
