Dear Lori, I, too, grew up reading stories about saints. I soon came to realize that they were not all pure history, but a mixture of fact and legend. It might, on occasion, be difficult to distinguish between mystical experiences and hallucinations. At times, I believe, even the saints and their advisers were not quite sure. The authenticity of these experiences would best be discerned as to what effects they produce in the life of the one having these experiences.
Now, when I want to learn something about a saint I look into a book like, "All Saints" by Robert Ellsberg, that includes also saints not formally canonized.
Each one of us is called to become the saint God wants US to be, not another saint we have come to admire!
I, too, like your quote!
Love,  Edda
