Dear Barbara, the answer to that last question is a resounding "Yes". Nothing stays the same no matter how much we would like some things not to change. Change is really the only thing that is predictable. We just don't know exactly how it will happen. This is, on the one hand, what makes us feel insecure, but on the other, it is what makes life exciting. The challenging thing is for me to be open to whatever it will be.

Love,  Edda

Barbara:  Thank you for the story, and also for the Emerson quote.  He's one of my very favorites!

As I have promised to continue synopsizing "The Dawn of the Mystical Age" by Frank X. Tuoti,  I had better get on with it!

To me, the book represents a most valuable collection of quotes by some of the greatest spiritual teachers and philosophers of the 20th century, from both the West and the East. Moreover, it points to developments which can be observed more and more clearly since the book first appeared in 1997. I will try to give you an overview of them by quoting some of the headings from the table of contents.

Part One, "The Dawn of the Mystical Age", deals, among other themes, with "Humanity on the Precipice", "A New River" (i.e. A New Church), "The Concentration Camp of Reason" (i.e. dominance of left-brain functioning), and "Owning Our Shadow".
Part Two,
"The Sacred Feminine", comprises themes like "Hagia Sophia", "The Mother", "The Mystic and the Sacred Feminine", and "The Souls of Our Children".
Part Three,
"Characteristics of th New Consciousness", deals, among others, with the topics of "Recovery of the Sacred", "The Fall of Fundamentalism", "All Things Inter-Are", "The Forgotten Virtue" (i.e. mindfulness), "The Emergence of Women", "Swords into Plowshares".
Part Four,
"Meditation: Door to the New Consciousness", contains "The Challenge of Everyday Life", "Search for the True Self, "Death is Transfiguration", and more.
Part Five, "Ways of Christian Contemplative Meditation": "The Way of the Mantra", "The Way of the Jesus Prayer", "The Way of Centering Prayer", "The Way of Zen", "The Way of the Breath", "Lectio Divina",  and "Invitation to the Dance".

I admit that I do not know whether the book is still available or out of print, as often happens in our fast-living time. I have, therefore, tried to give as full an overview as possible. The ISBN given is 0-8245-1688-5 (pbk.)

Barbara G Your post brought to mind a short little story. A world renowned Scripture Scholar who had dedicated his whole life to studying the Bible was asked what he felt were the most important words in the Bible. His response was emphatic--"There are five words which are the most important
quote:

--AND IT CAME TO PASS!! No matter how bad things are or how phenominal they are, it came to pass; it didn't come to stay!!!!
Thank you for the reminder.

Edda: Thank you I try to keep that "YES" in my heart!

Imenuff: Good quote, really something to remember. It reminds me of the famous words of Theresa of Avila, which I just can translate clumsily:

Nothing shall lead you astray,
Nothing shall frighten you,
everything passes,
God doesn´t change.
Patience accomplishs everything.
God alone is enough.

Love,
Barbara

For those of you who have read my post on Frank X. Tuoti´s "The Dawn of the Mystical Age" I am adding what has made me grateful for the book:

Despite our present moral and environmental predicament, and despite the enormous evil and appalling suffering by which we are surrounded, Tuoti´s book is one about hope, even "radiant expectations". Not closing his eyes to the fact that "humankind hangs...on the precipice" and will have to choose "between suicide and adoration", the author finds hope in the "reality that God´s spirit still hovers over us" and that the "mercy of the Divine Mother is without limit and infinitely beyond our capacity to even remotely" comprehend".
Tuoti sees a new mystical-intuitive consciousness structure, into which the rational mind will be integrated, arising. "Though presently realized by a relative few, this higher consciousness has already ´descended´upon a...number of spiritually gifted people, transcending religious, ethnic and geographical boundaries".

Let me share this quote with you which I just stumbled over:

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child´s world.
Love of books is the best of all."

Juliana, I have been heartend to hear that book reading in children is making a come-back, after years of computers and gameboys, and videos and DVDs etc.

My granddaughter found it really hard to learn reading, and often said, "it's boring, I'd rather watch a video." but we persevered, and now she loves reading. A great reward.

Barbara T., I am sorry I cannot help you with suggesting any suitable books for your granddaughter, as I am not at all familiar with children´s books in English.
There are many excellent ones in German, but as far as I know they do not get translated, or do they? I´ll try and find out. Can any one of the English-speaking friends offer suggestions?

For some time now I have been thinking of presenting another book here, for which I am truly grateful, as it has changed and intensified my spiritual life, having become a daily companion to me. Before starting, let me ask if it is well-known in your part of the world anyway, or what you think of it.
An American friend first introduced me to it. I then got a German translation, so I will not be able to quote from it in English (yet).

The original version is entitled "Prayers of the Cosmos", by Neil-Douglas-Klotz, with a preface by Matthew Fox.
As a linguist, he reveals a wealth of meaning of the "Our Father" and the Beatitudes by leading us back to the language Jesus spoke, i.e.Aramaeic (correct spelling?). Don´t most people have problems with what is meant by "Lead us not into temptation"? How about - I am trying a re-translation into English - "Let superficial things not delude us, but free us from what keeps us away from our one goal"?

Comments cordially invited!

Juliana

Thank you, Edda! I have had really wonderful feedback from people who said reading it had renewed their faith. It can be recommended as a Christmas present.

HHHHMMMMMM, when I read this,
quote:

"Lead us not into temptation"? "1.Let superficial things not delude us but, 2.free us from what keeps us away from our one goal"?
When I read the first part of this I almost felt like we were returning to that good old "trinity" of evil--the WORLD, the FLESH, and the DEVIL that as a child I was taught. However, #2 could not more aptly describe my retreat which anytime there is one-on-one retreat, it is very intense. What a gifted part of my retreat were those "superficial things" of the opera, concert, and German Christmas fair. I am forever grateful that my retreat director believes in the total Incarnational Reality of all life. For myself, at least, the greatest prayerfulness/healing, etc. can come when I am involved in something that leaves "my agenda" behind me.

Oh dear, oh dear, Betty, there must be misunderstandings on their way, due to my translation! I am not sure that I understand what you say correctly, but maybe "superficial" was the wrong word. As an Austrian, I would never call the opera, Christmas fairs or whatever superficial! I remember warning you: I can only WALK in English, whereas in German I can DANCE! Edda, please come to clarify things with the English original! "Prayers of the Cosmos" is too valuable a book to suffer from misinterpretation.

Juliana, dear one, not to worry. I am sure I may have misread what you meant. Your WALKING in English does so well,
wish I knew German so i could watch you DANCE!!

Alright, Juliana, here is the English origianl of the quote from Prayers of the Cosmos:

"Don't let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back."

What difference one word can make! I agree with you, Betty and Juliana, there is nothing superficial about opera, concerts and enjoying the happy crowds at the Christkindl Market!

Thank you so much Edda, for putting this right. And welcome back, Betty, from me, too.
It would be a shame to keep people from looking into this truly great book by creating false impressions.

To let you have another example of the wealth of meaning which is released by going back to the language which Jesus spoke, I quote two more possible versions of the second beatitude (courtesy of Edda). Aramaeic being a language which functions on more than just one level, there are interpretations that got lost when the Bible was first translated into (very rational) Greek.

By way of a virtual Christmas present, let me share what has become my comfort in times of trouble:

"Blessed are those in emotional turmoil, they shall be united inside by love."

"Turned to the Source are those deeply confused by life, they shall be returned from their wandering."
