Jude,
I too send my virtual hugs to you. I hope you can come to a place of relative peace with the relationship with your son. I pray that some healing energy will come into all the people involved so that all can live together in some semblance of harmony.

You use the word "grotty" which I have never ever heard before.

Take the following quiz and see if you can name the right country the expression comes from.

G'day, mates!
Whilst
Fixin' to
Grotty
Eh?
Kibbitz
Bei ihm/ihr fällt der Groschen pfennigerweise
Guten tag

Thankful One, How nice of you to include some German! Do you mind if I "fix" the last two? "Bei ihm/ihr fällt der Groschen pfennigweise" - is an idiom meaning he/she is slow to understand, not very intelligent; "Guten Tag" is the greeting used in Germany. In Austria we mostly use "Grüß Gott", meaning "May God greet (bless) you".
I do not know about the English ones. Someone will provide the answers, I am sure.

Dear Grateful One

G'day mate, it's a pity there's no sound on these things, cause oi could let youse all 'ear 'ow them words are spoken, seein' as 'ow they're 'ow we talk in Aussieland, an' no other bludger can get the accent right, eh.

Sorry, but oi dunno the words from that other foreign lingo.

Rules for speakin' Aussie:
1   don't ever open ya mouth more than 1 cm (1/2"), cause the flies get in.
2   no 'h' at the start or 'g' at the end of words - e.g. goin' 'ome an' doin' nothin'.
3   vowels are very flat - see 1 above.
4    upward inflection at the end a most sentences, unless they're questions, which 'ave downward inflection at the end.
5   there's very little accent variation throughout the whole of Aussieland.

Oi 'ope this 'as cleared it all up for youse foreigners, an' yez'll all start talkin' proppa.

See yez all laita.
Joe

Joe, I love it I could 'hear' the Aussie accent very clearly from your description.

Grotty means the same as Yuk really (if you know that one!!! )

Grot is a word used for nasty and unsavoury things, like the bits left behind in the trash can (dustbin in English)

I've had bits of emotional 'grot' floating around me today and making me feel quite unwell.
I hope that's sorted it out.

Jude

Thank you, Jude, for teaching me a new word!

Kibitz is, I believe, Yiddish and usually means watching a card game over the shoulders of the players and perhaps giving unwanted advice.

Eh? sounds Scottish to me??

"Fixin' to"  I have heard here in the States meaning "getting ready to..."  Perhaps it has another meaning as well!

Edda

Yes, Eh? definitely sounds sort of northern Britain. Northumberland or Cumbria perhaps?

I would have thought Whilst was of English origin too, but may be wrong?

I don't pretend to be any sort of expert on words but here's my take.

Joe got it right on G'day mate being Australian.

Jude got it right on whilst being English. No one else uses this word as much as the English.

Edda got it right that fixin' to is American, specifically Southern and she got the meaning right as "getting ready to."

Jude got it right about grotty, which I had never heard before she mentioned it.

My understanding is that "Eh?" is a characteristic of the Canadians as in "How's it going, eh?"

Edda also got kibbitz right as to the origin and the meaning.

Juliana, of course, got the German and Austrian words correct.

How about these sayings-

No problem, mon.

Far out.

Manana.

Cheerio.

The ones below are the words for hello. If you get more than four right, you are good.

Hej!

Abaza.

Salaam.

Hola.

Om shanti shanti shanti.

Bonjour.

God dag.

Goedendag.

Moi.

Geia sou.

Aloha.

Shalom.

Namaste.

Szervusz.

Haileo.

Ciao.

Jambo.

Annyong.

Gudde Moiën.

Dzien dobry.

Oi.

Zdravstvuite.

Malo.

Guid mornin.

Buenos dias.

Sawatdi.

Chao.

Dydd da.

For answers if you are curious, I found these on this page.

Thankful One, before starting on this homework, I have to admit that you have surprised and - a little - puzzled me. May I ask you: is your nationality English or American? Or does the "English" you mention in brackets refer to your native language? But then American English is as different from British English as the German spoken in Germany is from the variety we speak here in Austria! (Or do you see more or fewer differences, Edda?)
I do not mean to be inquisitive, I would just like to know whereabouts in this wide world to put you !

Joe, special thanks to you for the Australian variety of English which you have contributed. I, too, can just "hear" what you have posted, as one of my former students (of English), who moved to Australia a number of years ago, came to visit his parents last year and also visited with me. It was fun to notice the distinct "Aussi" accent when he spoke his native German. Even the way he said o.k. sounded Australian!

Hello (American version) Thankful One that is a great link. I've got a slang version "What Up" Today I am gratitude challenged by weather and snow every winter about this time although I do well with SAD symptoms about now it gets to me....I am sick of snow it's no longer spiritual, serene , beautiful it's just snow something to move, shovel, its hard at the bottom. I know there ae others here that snow affects too so I should not moan but I am s-oo-o-oo-oo-o tired of snow and sore muscles and knees from shoveling Whew that felt good !!!!!!! Edda be careful and get help shoveling.....Imenuff if only I could afford the fees to ship you some in a refridgerated truck I would Imenuff we have enuff to share with you....last night I was dreaming of an invention to plug in and melt the snow....so when I start dreaming about it I know it is frustrating me...however today I have my grandchildren all day so soon I will be too busy to focus on this and I will be another day closer to spring.I love the photos that transport my thougts there. A picture says more than 1000 words, Thankful One! So your nationality is clear, once and for all. I had always thought so, anyway, but thinking in terms of languages after reading all the different greetings, I suddenly had my doubts.

Barbara, I am really sorry for you and for Edda with all this snow that needs to be shovel(l)ed. (The second "L" is for you, Jude - British spelling ). Only there is nothing I can do for you !

Perhaps you can feel just a little warmer when I share what I am deeply grateful for today. I can hardly believe it yet: after a long, hard, frustrating search my son has got a job, and he can start work on Monday! The joy I felt for you, Solomon, some time ago is now what I feel for him. A warm thank you to each one of you who lit a candle, especially to you, Betty, who started the candle group for him.

HAGS ( = Have a good Saturday and Sunday),

Today I'm majorly gratitude challenged.  I've recently joined a choir, and offered to do arrangements for some songs (four part choral).  I did a good, interesting arrangement for one song (Greensleeves), but the musical director didn't like it (I think it was too modern).  I did a different, more traditional arrangement, but it still wasn't good enough, and the director said: "No, you've done it wrong".  I tried to point out that it was more a matter of differences of opinion about harmonies, but he said the same thing.

I have a major problem with unfair criticism anyway, and to be told it was "wrong" really p***ed me off.

I'm going to keep singing with the choir, because it's my soul food, but it's the last arrangement I'll do for them.

Politeness and consideration doesn't cost anything.

With Love
Joe

Joe, I'm glad you're going to keep singing with the choir despite the negative experience you had with the director.  Who knows why he acted that way, maybe he felt threatened or insecure.  I hope you can let that be his issue and move forward and continue to enjoy your singing.  If that's something meaningful to you, don't let anyone's attitude deprive you of it.

Hugs,
Lori

Dear Joe, I am sorry about your encounters with your choir director. It seems to me that he does not know the difference between somethinng he does not like and it being "wrong." My husband used to be organist and choir director in our church. He wrote his own arrangements. He has his preferences but I never heard him say about an arrangement he did not like that it was "wrong". I agree with the others that the problem is his and not yours! I am glad you are going to keep singing!

Much love,
Edda

Dear Joe, I agree with Lori. It is not at all unusual when someone is that blunt and harsh with his/her criticism, that the particular individual feels threatened. It is good that you did not give up something that is very meaningful to you because of his problem. Congratulations for growing a little more because of what happened.

Dear Joe
I am so happy you decided to keep singing and I agree with you that unfair critiquing based on anothers bias or rigidity is a personal issue of theirs and no matter how often or in what artistic genre you would arrange the director already had decided to be closed to your offering. Please take whatever lesson offered through this experience as you raise your voice in song to the heavens. For God gave you the voice to sing his praises for others to know God's love
warmly
