Arow, I appreciate your reflections on strength and weakness. We live in a society where rugged individualism is valued. Such "strong" people may look down on "weak" ones and be incapable of seeking or accepting help when they need it. There is strength in admitting one's weakness and being able to accept help. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and times when one or the other predominate. The great thing is that we are all interconnected and can share our gifts and help each other.

We NEED each other, as you say, in many ways and on many levels. It is an illusion to think that anyone of us can live independently of everyone else. (In a Chicago snow storm we quickly realize how dependent we are on those who clear the snow to open up traffic to let people get to work, stock supermarkets, enable mail delivery, etc.)

Love,
Edda

Arow, I don't know what you think, but in my experience, some, and men especially, find it difficult or impossible to admit to being vulnerable.

Someone I know, knows he's vulnerable, admits to me he is, but would never want it to be generally known that he is!

I think I am a strong person, but know that I am also very vulnerable and "weak" ( as others may think of it) in some ways.

I think there can be strength in vulnerability, and you can see straight through false "strength" or bravado, anyway.

Yes, we do all need each other. We balance and compliment each other. We are all those "quiet angels with just one wing" who hold each other up.

Thank you for your thoughts. I hope mine make sense.

Jude

Arow, Edda and Jude,
Okay, I'm a man but I will come right out and admit that I am vulnerable.

And proud of it.

In fact, I celebrate my vulnerability as it has been a hard won battle for me to claim it.

It is in my vulnerability that lies my ability to deeply feel the joys and sorrows of life.

Without vulnerability, I'd be lost in a world without hurt, or joy.

I remember a quote that Joe shared a long time ago. I liked it so much I copied it into Word and printed it out and placed it on my refrigerator. (Thanks Joe!)

The unendurable is the beginning of the curve of joy.

Love is a thing that sometimes has many meanings, but they are all honest and sincere.

Love is the invisible thread that links our heart to others.

Love is a thing that gives us the security we need to go on without fear.

Love is when we know someone really sees us for whom we really are and remains at our side faithfully.

Love is a touch of a hand, a look into your eyes and no need for words.

Love is the thing that never forgets to show its strength when we are afraid.

Love is a soft kiss in the middle of the night without a cause or reason.

Love is the one thing we all seek in this short life of ours.

Love is found in the words written by lovers and the meanings in between.

Love is the one thing worth the world's finest silver and gold, but can never be bought or sold.

Love is the thing we can't make happen, it just does.

Love is at times promised by many and kept by less.

Love is something that happens to us without any lessons or teachings.

Love is worth more than its single word can say.

Love is with devotion and unconditional surrender.

Love is a matter of the heart that lives in the soul.

Love is caring about another more than yourself without any exceptions.

Love is something that can never be mistaken for a simple crush.

Love is making life much brighter even on the most cloudiest days.

Love is in every touch we offer to our children.
Love is in the words we speak to those we care about.

Love is never simple to understand and has its endless mysteries.

Love is falling in love over again and again with the same person.

Love is wild and sweet all at the same time.

Love is a feeling we always seek out in this life of ours.

Love is more than happy times, it is sad times too.
Love is filled with forever changing moods.

Love is worthy by the rich and the poor
for the meaning and strength is always the same.

Love is never giving up on the one you care about.
Love is always being there when the chips are down.

Love is trying to be better at a relationship and never giving up.
Love is doing what you sometimes would rather not do
for the one you love.

Love is eating out when you don't want to...just because someone you care about ask you to.
Love is knowing the many moods of someone
and caring about them just the same.

Love is a thing that has its own moods, and anger can be one of them, but it always finds its way back to a tranquil heart.
Love is forgiveness with a genuine apology.
Love is accepting someone for the way they are without regret.
Love is the spirit that lights each day.

Love is ever lasting and continues through infinity.
Love is sharing that last bite with the one you love.

Love is silly and playful, but often has its serious moments.

Love is writing down on paper that you love someone
over and over again.

Love is wanting to be with another person forever.
Love is wishing you never had to say another goodbye.

Love is going the right way on the right path with the right person.
Love is calling someone up to say that you love them
without any notice.

Love is falling down and having another person to help you up.

Love is having the best life has to offer and sharing it with someone that cares.
Love is waiting for another with opened arms and a warm greeting.
Love is caring enough to say you are sorry and meaning it.

Love is knowing you are not always right and admitting it.
Love is telling the one you love that you will always be there
no matter what.
Love is playing the game peek-a-boo with someone you dearly love
and filling the room with laughter.

Love is laughing as hard as you both can
and know you want to laugh even more.

Love is taking time out to be happy together.
Love is meaning every word you say.

Love is letting the time go by without looking at the clock.

Love is looking at life with double vision.

Love is life and we cherish every minute.
Love is in the rainfall as it hits our face
and it is shared with someone we adore.

Love is showing funny faces at one another.
Love is cheering up another person when they cry.
Love is missing someone way too much.
Love is making someone happy again
after you made them sad.

Love is showing the world that love can really happen.
Love is sorrow turned upside down.

Love is the one thing that can make us complete.
Love is being happy with each other through good times and bad.

Love is helping each other along the paths of life.
Love is being thankful for the one you have.
Love is never going back on a promise.

Love is thinking about the other person
more often than yourself.

Love is remembering to say "I Love You!"

You must dare to disassociate yourself from those who would delay your journey... Leave, depart, if not physically, then mentally. Go your own way, quietly, undramatically, and venture toward trueness at last. ~ Vernon Howard

I like the honesty and courage of the above quote.

It seems to be the easiest thing to do to keep with energy that we are familiar with but is actually holding us back on our spiritual growth.

Let's all support each other and all we know to venture forth towards trueness at last.

As our English friends would say, "Tally ho!"

T.O. I like this quote too. Very pertinent for me today.

I'm not sure what "Tally-ho" means, but I don't think I would use it because of its association with fox-hunting. It's what the huntsman shouts on sighting the fox.

Thankful One,

I agree, it needs honesty and courage to put into practice what the quote says. At certain points in our lives we all have to make decisions to "venture toward trueness at last". As parents we also have to let our children choose their own paths once they are grown-up, hard as it may be.

Helen Keller is often quoted and for good reason.
  • On Love:
It is wonderful how much time good people spend fighting the devil. If they would only expend the same amount of energy loving their fellow men, the devil would die in his own tracks of ennui.
  • On Optimism:
Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.
  • On Faith:
Believe. No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.
  • On Power:
It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.
  • On Ambition:
One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar.
  • On Optimism:
Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.
  • On Companionship:
Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.
  • On Ability:
We can do anything we want if we stick to it long enough. (I believe this with all my heart)
  • On Life:
We would never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world.
  • On Self Confidence:
What I am looking for is not out there; it is in me. (I need to keep reminding myself of this one)
  • On Politics:
Our democracy is but a name. We vote. What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real -- though not avowed -- autocrats. We choose between 'Tweedledum' and 'Tweedledee'.
  • On Decision Making:
People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.
  • On Character:
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.
  • On Faith:
Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.
  • On Ability:
I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do.
  • On Life:
I believe in the immortality of the soul because I have within me immortal longings.
  • On Completing Tasks:
I long to accomplish a great and noble task; but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.
  • On her Inadequacies:
I seldom think about my limitations, and they never make me sad. Perhaps there is just a touch of yearning at times; but it is vague, like a breeze among flowers.
  • On Vision:
It gives me a deep, comforting sense that things seen are temporal and things unseen are eternal.
  • On Relationships:
Relationships are like Rome -- difficult to start out, incredible during the prosperity of the 'golden age', and unbearable during the fall. Then, a new kingdom will come along and the whole process will repeat itself until you come across a kingdom like Egypt... that thrives, and continues to flourish. This kingdom will become your best friend, your soul mate, and your love.
  • On Apathy:
Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings.
  • On Life:
What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.

  • On Optimism:
When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.
  • On Knowledge:
Knowledge is love and light and vision.
  • On Life:
Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.
  • On Life:
Life is an exciting business, and most exciting when it is lived for others.
  • On Dignity:
Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world right in the eye.
  • On Hope:
Once I knew only darkness and stillness. My life was without past or future. But a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness and my heart leaped to the rapture of living.
    (My personal favorite)

  • On Unity:
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.
  • On Hope:
Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it.
  • On Optimism:
Be of good cheer. Do not think of today's failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles.
  • On Security:
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
(This last sentence is another of her best for me)

  • On Self Pity:
Self-pity is our worst enemy and if we yield to it, we can never do anything wise in the world.
  • On Love:
The best and most beautiful things in life cannot be seen, not touched, but are felt in the heart.
  • On Overcoming Problems:
The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse.
  • On Vision:
The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but has no vision.
  • On Attitude:
To keep our faces toward change, and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate, is strength undefeatable.
  • On Patience:
Toleration is the greatest gift of mind; it requires the same effort of the brain that it takes to balance oneself on a bicycle.
  • On Happiness:
True happiness... is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
  • On Life:
Believe, when you are most unhappy, that there is something for you to do in the world. So long as you can sweeten another's pain, life is not in vain.
  • On Ability:
When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.

Thanking you, Thankful One, for these quotes. I have always regarded Helen Keller as a most inspiring person and made my students read about her fascinating life. Our minor problems fade into nothingness when compared to the obstacles she had to overcome.

    Betty,
It seems like their are several of us that could use some inspiration right now and so I thought I would share some inspirational quotes. Hopefully you can use them in your wonderful newsletter.

    1. Mark Twain
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

    2. Luigi Pirandello
In bed my real love has always been the sleep that rescued me by allowing me to dream.

    3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

    4. Zig Ziglar
People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.

    5. T. S. Elliot
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

    6. Buddha
All that we are is the result of what we have thought.

    7. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

    8. Peter F. Drucker
We know nothing about motivation. All we can do is write books about it.

    9. Nora Roberts
If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place.

    10. Stephen Covey
Begin with the end in mind.

Here are some quotes for love and loss. The top two are is my current favorite.

    Kahlil Gibran
Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.

SocratesThe hottest love has the coldest end.
    Washington Irving
Love is never lost. If not reciprocated, it will flow back and soften and purify the heart. AnonymousLove begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a teardrop. Alfred Lord Tennyson'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Margaret MitchellI was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together again and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken -- and I'd rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as I lived. G. K. ChestertonThe way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost.

Richard, I have been told this quote a few times by a good friend now deceased. Thank you for the reminder!

I don't quite agree with Margaret Mitchell concerning something broken. Mended it won't be like new, but it may have a new beauty of its own, the scars bearing fruits the unblemished whole might not have produced. Applied to us, it makes me think of the "Wounded Healer".

Thank you, Edda, I agree with you. It seems to me that we all have to go through challenges in life which leave us wounded, and that it is only then that we may become healers for others.

What you say about the "new beauty" which may come out of something broken reminds me of a most impressive colorful mosaic on the wall in a friend“s home. She has created it out of the numerous bits and pieces of a valuable vase that she has broken! So something completely new can be made out of what broke...
It needs time - and patience, of course.
