Thankful One, your Henry James quote is so beautiful. The simple ones are often the most powerful, aren't they.

I will certainly try to put it into practise.

The Celts, in their traditional beliefs, have a series of triads that serve as a guide for life.  One has challenged me for many years, and today I can say that finally I understand:

In Life there are three imperatives:

To suffer
To choose
To change

Thankful One, your quote reminds me of a small book I was given, when I was still a teenager. It made a profound impression on me, "Kindness" by Frederick William Faber. It was the German translation, "Von der Guete" which I liked better than the English original which I found many years later.
How often does anyone hand a book about subjects like this to a teenager? They just might decide to read it!

Thankful one, I especially like the part of your post
quote:

[I hope everyone who reads this will not only be kind to others today, but will also be kind to themselves. Take the time today to something especially kind to yourself.
. So many times during retreat, I was reminded to be as gentle with myself as I would be with those I companion. For those of us who are Christians, we often learned that there are two great commandments --Love God with all your heart, mind, and soul; Second--Love your neighbor AS you love yourself. I am often reminded of the importance of that little two letter word AS and the fact that the commandment DOES NOT SAY LOVE NEIGHBOR BETTER THAN SELF, BUT AS MUCH AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF. Thank you for an excellent reminder especially at this time of year.

Dear Betty,
Thank you for reminding us of that commandment. "Love your neigbour as yourself." It's meaning has been altered so much I fear we have forgotten it's original meaning.
I was horrified when I heard that the word, or name JOY had been misused as, "Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last" in some Christian circles.

It's such a beautiful word and name too.

When at a Yoga class I remember being taught that, if we put ourselves last then we are probably of no use to others. Makes much more sense to me!

I found this adorable quote yesterday on the wall of a state agriculture office:

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Leave the rest to God.

Thankful one

Thankful one, you are obviously a collector of these lovely quotes, like me. I must have hundreds on my PC, but I can never find the one I'm looking for

Dear Betty, you make such an important point. If we don't love ourselves well, we won't love our neighor well either. Someone once quipped, "God help the poor neighbor!"

Here's a couple of quotes that some of you might like:

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably have to deal with watches you from the mirror ever morning.

True thanksgiving means that we thank God for what he has done for us and not to tell God what we have done for God.     George Hendrick

Dear Jude and Edda, How very sad to have such a beautiful word like JOY so totally altered. Truly, "God help the poor neighbor!", Edda for when we do not truly love ourselves, the poor neighbor becomes nothing more than a prideful means to an end--the end of trying to prove to myself and others that I truly am valuable. Then if the neighbor does not respond correctly with all the kudos, our pride lashes out at their ingratitude.

Much blessings in this new year.

I'm a true believer in loving yourself first, or you're no good to anyone.  In Metta Meditation we're taught to offer lovingkindness FIRST to ourselves, for example:

May I be safe.
May I be well.
May I be happy.
May I be free.

and from there offer the same to our loved ones, our mentors, others who are suffering, and others we find difficult to love, then eventually branching out to offer lovingkindness to all beings.

Where I work we sometimes also remind people that on airplanes during the safety talk they tell you to put the mask to your face first and breathe, and THEN help others.  I remind myself of this often, especially when I'm tempted to forego sleep, meditation, etc., because I have too much to do.  I find that self-care isn't optional.

In one of the community choirs I sang with until recently we sang a traditional Irish Blessing.  The words always inspired me:

Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm against your face,
And the rain fall soft upon your fields
Until we meet again
May God hold you
In the palm of his hand

I wish peace and love to be in all your lives in the coming year

Happy New Year to all!!!!!!
Lori good to see your post..and today I explored awhile to find some quotes that represent my hopes and gratitudes for 2008 for all of us family here...I'll start with Erma Bombeck she wrote a column here and I loved her satirical style....."It takes a lot of courage to show your dreams to someone." My next favorite literary mentor is Kahlil Gibran who writes"Faith is a knowledge within the heart, beyond the reach of proof." My third example is Henry David Thoreau "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined."

Joe, I too love singing the Irish Blessing.

Lori, that philosophy is beautiful. The Dalai Llama talks often of Lovingkindness.

Barbara T, I really liked your quotes, especially the first one.

Thankful one,
quote:

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably have to deal with watches you from the mirror ever morning.
This is so true! We are so often our own worst enemy and often sabotage the very things we say we want most. It takes an awful lot of courage to honestly admit how many times our own attitudes and negative self-image has kept us from succeeding.
Lori, What a very special insight
quote:

Where I work we sometimes also remind people that on airplanes during the safety talk they tell you to put the mask to your face first and breathe, and THEN help others
and on such a very practical level. It is so true, yet as many times as I have ridden a plane, I have never thought about it.
Joe, The Irish Blessing always has been a favorite, maybe because my husband is third generation Irish. May your life also be filled with peace and love during this coming year.
Barbara T, you Thoreau quote reminded me of one of my favorites from Robert Frost --"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

May each of us "live" our favorite quotes more and more each day of this new year.

Let me go back to the commandment of "Liebe Deinen Nächsten wie Dich selbst" (in German for you, Betty) - "Love your neighbor as yourself". What  has been  pointed to is, of course, most important. There are people who will say that they find it impossible to love others as they do not, cannot love themselves. - To round up the theme, though, I would like to add what has been giving me food for thought ever since I came across it. -  Martin Buber, translating the passage from Hebrew into German, presents this version:
"Liebe deinen Nächsten - er ist wie Du"  - "Love your neighbor - he is like you". To me, this paves the way to love, reminding us that we are well capable of love, as on the deepest level we are all alike. The differences between us are negligible, they do not count when it comes to loving. Basically we all have the same needs, cravings, fears...

(I can only hope this will come across as I mean it - following my German patterns of thinking ).

Though I like the Martin Buber version, I like the version from the "Mystical 10 Commandments" a little better. It phrases it from the standpoint that we are expressions of God. It basically says that if we wish to live our Divinity, this is what the Commandment would mean for us.

Thou shalt hold thy neighbor close. His joy shall be thy joy, his sorrow shall be thy sorrow, and the understanding of Christ in you shall see the Light to shed.

Blessings of Love, Alchemist

Whilst reading a Christmas present book, "Flight into Freedom and Beyond" by Eileen Caddy, founder and inspiration for the Findhorn Spritual foundation in Forres, Scotland, I found a quote from David Spangler, American founder member of the same community. I thought I would share it with you. It's from about 1970

"A turning point in the consciousness of humanity has already happened, and we are embarking on an utterly new phase of our path towards God. The time of waiting for the second coming of the Christ is over. This time the Christ has not appeared in a physical body, but has been born within the hearts and minds of humanity. It is now the time to realise this and bring it into expression."

I hope I don't upset any Christians who still await the second coming, but this quote really resonated with me. I feel strongly that that is what we are all about now. Some 37 years after David Spangler said it, the consciousness is really taking off, and there are many people who are involved in bringing this new, 'from the heart' movement into reality. Light workers........we are all Light workers on this Forum.
I for one really like the thought that Christ is in my heart, and working from there.

Jude

You make a good point about being careful to not offend Christians who are uncomfortable with concepts from non-Biblical sources. However there is a rich mystic heritage among Christians which include St. John of the Cross, St. Theresa, Thomas Merton, Meister Eckhart and Brother Lawrence just to mention a few. Most, if not all, have experienced the presence of Christ within.

One passage I like which dates back to the time of Christ and perhaps before is the "Vision of Enoch" (from the Dead Sea Scrolls).
