The posts about roses reminded me of one of my favorites, from Emerson (adapted).

"These roses under my window make no reference to former roses or to better ones; they are for what they are; they exist with God today.  There is no time to them.  There is simply the rose, it is perfect in every moment of its existence.  Before a leaf-bud has burst, its whole life acts; in the full-blown flower there is no more, in the leafless root there is no less.  Its nature is satisfied and it satisfies nature in all moments alike.

"But we postpone or remember.  We do not live in the present, but with reverted eye lament the past, or, heedless of the riches that surround us, stand on tiptoe to foresee the future.  We cannot be happy or strong until we too live with nature in the present, above time."

Today I took a long walk and it started snowing. I remember what Betty said that the snow made her feel like a little girl and helped bring out her playfulness. There is something marvelously clean and pure about the snow falling and blanketing everything with it's white charm. It's refreshing to hear the crunch of the snow underfoot. The sound and the sensory aspects took me out of my head and brought me into the here and now.

It helped me to be calm; happy to realize that not even mighty forests can stop change. Peace is descending into my soul like the snow gently falling out of the sky onto the ground. Thank you friends.

Here are some quotes I hope you might enjoy.

We are most deeply asleep at the wheel when we fancy we control any switches at all. ~ Annie Dillard

Whatever we try to control does have control over us and our life. ~ Melanie Beattie

10,000 flowers in spring
The moon in autumn
A cool breeze in summer
Snow in Winter
If your mind isn't clouded by unneeded things
This is the best season of your life. ~ Tenth century Chinese poet   (I really like this one)

I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines. ~ Henry David Thoreau

Kindness is like snow -it beautifies everything it covers.

The Eskimos have 52 words for snow because it is so special to them; there ought to be as many for love.

Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the sidewalk before it stops snowing. ~ Phyllis Diller

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. ~ John Ruskin

One kind word can warm three winter months. ~ Japanese proverb

Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter. Who would think that those branches would turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it. ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~ Anne Bradstreet

In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer. ~ Albert Camus

Thankful One:  I especially like your Camus quote, the last one.  It really resonates with me.  I've had those "depth of winter" experiences, as I'm sure we all have.  It's the best learning experience there is.  (Not that I want a lot of them or anything.)

Thank you, Thankful one, for your latest selection of quotes. They all resonate with me, especially the one about the appointments with various trees, as I have appointments of this kind quite frequently, too.
I am also grateful for the one about the Eskimos´ 52 words for snow, and the demand  that there should be as many for "love". Lately, I have often thought of this one, when I wanted to talk about various conifers, of which we have many: my big dictionary only gives "pine" for three very different kinds of them .

To all,
Thanks for the kind words on my quotes. Here's more.

Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right. ~ Henry Ford

Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you’re saying. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

What I am is good enough if I would only be it only. ~ Carl Rogers

I guess the last one is my favorite.

Just in case you should need a quote to foster gratefulness:

If you can read this, thank a teacher. (Unknown)

I believe things are in our experience for a reason and lately have had many opportunities to comfort someone placed before me. This has brought to mind a favorite quote I would like to share.

The noblest ministry of this life is to be a comforter. To this are we all called. To speak the helpful word; to press with strength the weak hand; to bear up the faltering step; to sing the inspiring song; to be calm in the presence of trouble; to send out over turbulent wind and wave the thought, "peace, be still." Do this and you will fulfill the mission of a comforter , and great will be your own comfort.

Edna Lister is a particular favorite of mine.
Her words are both an enlightenment and a challenge. Here is another quote of hers.

Seeing God, we see everything else in its true proportions. We see in ourselves the image of God. We know that our character, our purposes, and our whole life are at one with God. We see that divine image in everyone. Loving God, we must love His image. Hatred can no longer have a place in us. Fear is cast out by a perfect love. Now are we the children of God.

I read a nice quote on the CAC radical grace website by Friar Richard Rohr that spoke to me:

God comes to us disguised as our life.

Alchemist, that's truly inspirational, and I agree totally with it.

Thankful one, that really speaks to me also. Perhaps if we really accepted that, we would be less frustrated by our lives.

I tend to regret that life hasn't worked out the way I had hoped. Then I ran across this quote which has helped change my perspective and helped free me from my own expectations. It has become a good meditation for me.

Don't cry because it's over.

Smile because it happened.

Thankful to be in the company of kind, gentle, considerate, loving people

I love this one and have it on my fridge.  Hope you enjoy it.

A TIME TO BELIEVE

TO believe is to know that every day is a new beginning, it is to trust that miracles happen and dreams really do come true.

TO believe is to see angels dancing among the clouds, to know the wonder of a stardust sky and the wisdom of the man in the moon.

TO believe is to know the value of a nurturing heart. the innocence of child's eyes and the beauty of an aging hand, for it is through their teachings we learn to love.

TO believe is to find the strength and the courage that lies within us, when it is time to pick up the pieces and begin again.

TO believe is to know we are not alone, that life is a gift and this is our time to cherish it.

TO believe is to know that wonderful surprises are just waiting to happen, and all our hopes and dreams are within reach. IF only we believe.........

I believe that poem is by B. J. Morbitzer. It is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

To follow up the thought on courage I would like to share the following quote:

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.

~ Pablo Casals

Alchemist, It has been well worth waiting for another quote of yours. This is a special one - thank you!

Jessica, I appreciate your poem, too, and will have to get some lodestones (is this the right word? It is what the dictionary says, but I have never heard it before) for my fridge. You know, we see this habit of attaching things there in American films,  but have not got used to it. It is a good idea, though.

Of course, Jude! Thanks! Isn´t it funny: in German it is "Magnet", but the dictionary (my big one, with 245.000 entries!) led me astray by putting "fig." next to English "magnet", which means used figuratively only. Now I know!
