Jessica,
I really like the Sleep Song. It is like discovering a jewel. Thanks for sharing this and including a link.

Thankful One, When you first started this thread, I thought I would not have anything to contribute, as I am not very familiar with songs in English, apart from the ones my son made me listen to. I am a fan of our rich heritage of Austrian classical music, Franz Schubert being my favorite, for whose music I am most grateful. But now I feel moved by the personal story you have shared, as well as by your mentioning "Amazing Grace". When it first became known here, my husband, who had got a cassette recording of it, played it over and over again, I forget how many times. I remember being amazed at this. You have to know that the German text differs considerably from the English one: It does not only mention being blind, but also being deaf and being lame, "but now I hear..." Therefore it moved me to tears (and still does) when his colleagues and students sang it at his funeral service shortly afterwards. I felt he was telling me that now he was freed of all the limits of this eartly existence.

My life goes on in endless song
above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
while to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
how can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
and hear their death knell ringing,
when friends rejoice both far and near
how can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
our thoughts to them are winging,
when friends by shame are undefiled
how can I keep from singing?

I like this song and I like Enya's arrangement of this old hymn...

This is my favorite hymn.

Be thou my vision, O God of my heart,
Naught be all else to me save that thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and though my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me God;
thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tower,
raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor world's empty praise,
thou my inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, first in my heart,
Sovreign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

U2 - The First Time Lyrics

I have a lover
A lover like no other
She got soul, soul, soul, sweet soul
And she teach me how to sing

Shows me colours when there's none to see
Gives me hope when I can't believe
That for the first time
I feel love

I have a brother
When I'm a brother in need
I spend my whole time running
He spends his running after me

When I feel myself going down
I just call and he comes around
But for the first time
I feel love

My father is a rich man
He wears a rich man's cloak
Gave me the keys to his kingdom coming
Gave me a cup of gold

He said I have many mansions
And there are many rooms to see
But I left by the back door
And I threw away the key
And I threw away the key
Yeah, I threw away the key
Yeah, I threw away the key

For the first time
For the first time
For the first time

I feel love

Ray Lamontagne - "Be Here Now"

Don't let your mind get weary and confused
Your will be still, don't try
Don't let your heart get heavy child
Inside you there's a strength that lies

Don't let your soul get lonely child
It's only time, it will go by
Don't look for love in faces, places
It's in you, that's where you'll find kindness

Be here now, here now
Be here now, here now

Don't lose your faith in me
And I will try not to lose faith in you
Don't put your trust in walls
'Cause walls will only crush you when they fall

Be here now, here now
Be here now, here now

I love all his music, but this one is special.  It's also interesting musically.

With Love
Joe
