I am hoping that we can share some music with each other that helps anyone stay in a grateful place or that inspires you in some way. I would prefer if people would say which words or what about the piece of music moves them.

I draw strength from the words in Let It Be by the Beatles.

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,

The words that help me let me know that:
There will be clouds in every life but there is still a light that shines on me. Sometimes it is harder to see the light than at other times, but the light is still shining on me.

shine until tomorrow, let it be.

The second part is the encouragement to shine on until tomorrow which is to take one day at a time and shine that day even with the clouds.

The third part is to let it (the clouds in your life) be and accept them for what they are - transitory times away from the light.

Thankful one

Dear Thankful one,
I too absolutley love music, and like Barbara T the range is enormous I'll have to give it some thought.

But something musical which inspired me recently was a film which has been made about Ralph Vaughan Williams. I've always been a great fan. I think his music is intensely passionate and spiritual, and yet, when you look at his picture he looks like an unkempt farmer or something.
It was very interesting to learn about his life, his devotion to a sick first wife, and his happiness and fulfullment with his second wife. I was in tears for a lot of the film. But what endeared me especially to him was a niece's memory of her uncle sitting "with 3 cats, each lying on his 3 'shelves', which he had on his chest and stomach." He was a large man and I can just picture him with his cats. As a cat-lover myself I have had similar moments (although I'm not big!!) with one cat on my lap, one on my chest and another tucked under my arm. Contentment.

Thanks for this new thread.
Jude

I quite like Alice Peacock singing Taught Me Well. It's about how she turned a negative situation into a positive one, which, to me, is the best, most profound kind of gratitude.

Solomon,
I checked out the song Tought Me Well and I enjoyed it. Thanks as I had never heard of it.

A song that has uplifted me is Bob Marley's Three Little Birds. It lets me remember that birds sing sweet songs and so can I if I don't allow myself to worry.

Rise up this mornin,
Smiled with the risin sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin, (this is my message to you-ou-ou:)

dont worry bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right.
dont worry (dont worry) bout a thing,
cause every little thing gonna be all right!

''There You'll Be '' by Faith Hill. It's a very powerful song.
It makes me cry everytime I hear it. It really makes me
think of all those whom I've been fortunate to know
in my life. We are all blessed by people whom we love.

I like the songs of Mary J.Blige, especially "No more drama" , that really lifts me up.

For the German speaking folks I would like to mention Werner Lämmerhirt (acoustic guitar) and his CD "Harte Zeiten", there I find lyrics that give me relief when life puts me to the test. I would like to quote something in German:

Thank you, Barbara, for the text! I would call it, "Daring to be Different", seeing things differently and perhaps feeling like an outsider in everyday life. This may look dumb to some and wise to others. The word Idiot "feels" to me a bit "stronger" in English than in German. The song suggests a shift in seeing things which fits with Betty's story on another thread about a boy seeing things very differently from the way his father does.

*Happy Face*,
Thank you for the mention of ''There You'll Be '' by Faith Hill. I wasn't aware of the song until your mention of it. I like it, especially the way it starts, "I can feel the magic floating in the air..." Thanks for the nice introduction.

At the risk of having people laugh at the next selection that helps me and inspires me (it's okay to smile or laugh really it is)...

I draw spiritual strength from the children's nursery rhyme that I sometimes repeat to myself when I'm driving:

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrrily, merrily
Life is but a dream.

Now you may say that I'm reading too much into it, but here's what it means to me. When it says, "Row, row, row" it means that I need to focus on doing the simple motions of living over and over again.

I am supposed to "row my boat" which is to do the tasks that I have at hand. I'm not supposed to focus on anyone else's boat or compare my boat to anyone else, but simply to focus on doing the motions in my part of the "boat".

"Gently" is the way we should live our life. To me this means we should each "gently row our own boats" and treat ourselves in a gentle manner as we "row" though life.

"down the stream" to me means going with the flow instead of against the flow and accepting the direction of our life "down the stream." The "stream" to me is the stream of consciousness of living my life.

"Merrily, merrily, merrily" says to me to always choose an attitude of gratefulness with the direction of our life as we go "down the stream."

"Life is but a dream" is to say that getting to live life with all its adventure is a wonderful dream come true.

Hope this post helped you smile.
Thankful one

Thankful One, you made at least me smile this morning! Thank you! One can find profound meaning in simple verses and also in humorous ones. I like one by Shel Silverstein:

NEW WORLD

Upside-down trees swingin' free,
Buses float and buildings dangle:
Now and then it's nice to see
The world-from a different angle.

The cartoon shows a kid bent all the way over looking up between his legs!

Thankful one and Edda, You have both begun my day with a smile. Thankful one, gratitude for starting this thread and especially for asking others to "share some music with each other that helps anyone stay in a grateful place or that inspires you in some way". If you had just posted "Row Row Row your boat," it would have been followed by many ?????? in my mind. What a very special gift you have given us in taking such a simple children's song and using it for such a profound meditation. That simple little song will never again be heard in the same way. Truly all of life is filled with the presence of the Holy One. When the melody plays on the mind's CD player, it just makes one smile and go back to that little one inside. Edda, dear, I must have a very vivid imagination--As the words of the song go by, I can picture the little one in the cartoon, or maybe the little one inside of me, just joyfully standing there bent all the way over (not sure the real me could do that any more) and seeing everything just swinging, floating, dangling and freely hanging out there in space. What a joyful beginning to a day both your posts create. Thank you both for beginning my day with a smile and for reminding me of how grateful I am for a vivid imagination and for how much music adds joy to my life.

Solomon, Barbara G,Leanda, Jude, You have all give me "homework" to do since I am unfamiliar with the ones you mentioned.
Barbara T "You Raise Me Up" is also one of my favorites. It always reminds me of the whole Christian concept of the Good Shepherd and the Lost Sheep and how when I get the most lost, I am always "raised up."

I'm going back to circle dancing and an Irish tune called "King of the Fairies" which we dance to.

Our group adapted it in order to make it more fun After dancing the usual elements of Earth and Water, we unjoin hands and 'fly' around the room (Air)in whatever way the mood takes us, then we come back together for Fire.
For the free dance or flying, I always imagined I was an eagle, with far sight and great strength and powerful wings. Great fun.  Jude

I would like to make a song dedication and encourage others to make a dedication as well.

My song to dedicate is "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles. I would like to dedicate this song to all the grieving mothers and fathers. My heart goes out to each and every one of you. I cannot begin to understand or comprehend your loss. I just wish I could take one ounce of your pain away.

When I was sixteen, my mother and I were sitting at the dining room table. We had the radio on which was unusual. When this song came on, my mother just sat down with me at the table which was even more unusual. Like most mothers, mine was a perpetual motion machine so it was rare to have her sit. She knew I liked the Beatles so she and I sat and were listening to this song Here Comes the Sun.

Then the phone rang. Even though the phone ringing in our large household was normal, my mother turned and looked at me frightened. We shared a stare and she slowly got up. When she first picked up the phone, she looked at me in disbelief. On the other end was a Highway Patrol Officer who told my mother that her oldest son had been killed in an accident. My mother sat down shocked and started crying. We hugged and listened to the rest of the song say, "Here comes the son, It's all right..."

I got to spend a lot of time with my mother before she died as I left my job to be her personal caregiver. We talked about this fateful day many times, how this song was playing and how we were listening to it at that time. She told me it that the experience of listening to this song at that time helped show her that in spite of all the pain in this life that there is a good and gentle spirit watching over and comforting each of us.

She told me that the loss of her son was the one wound which never healed, but that she had drawn strength from this song many times.

To all the mothers and fathers out there, I pray that each of you might find some comfort in this song. May God bring every blessing in your life and the strength to continue to love all those around you.

Thankful one

The Beatles- Here comes the sun

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to their faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
It's all right
It's all right

Thank you Edda for the very good interpretation of the song, I didn´t dare to try it on my own in English. Additionally I see the frustation in the text, that in everyday life there is so much injustice, and cruelty but also a faint hope that the last ones will come first in the end.

Thankful one: Thank you for sharing "Here comes the sun" and the tragedy involved, despite the loss it´s good to feel that there is more in this life than what we see on the surface.

Thankful one, thank you for sharing this touching story about your special song. Music can be so comforting and create special connections. I remember listening to a Brahms Symphony, sitting on my father's sick bed. We both listened so intently and felt so close. Whenever I hear this music again I am reminded of this special moment with my father.

Hope Coach,  thank you for telling us about the musical history in your family. Music enriches our lives in so many ways. I am grateful for the composers who were gifted so wonderfully with all the melodies that stay with us and brighten our days.

Edda

I learned an interesting history of the song Amazing Grace which has inspired and continues to inspire many of us.

The words to the song are written by John Newton and the melody is by Unknown. John Newton experienced what he was to refer to later as his “great deliverance” when he was attempting to steer his slave ship through a violent storm. He thought that all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink. He exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” He began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him.

Wintley Phillips believes John Newton heard the slave's melody while Captain of a slave ship and later wrote the words to this wonderful song. To hear the story of the history of this song (it brought tears to my eyes) click the following link:

Amazing Grace History/"Amazing Grace" By Wintley Phipps

Below are some links to my favorite versions of this song followed by the lyrics. I hope the songs bring Amazing Grace into each of your lives.

My personal favorite voice
nana mouskouri - amazing grace

Elvis has a special version for those fans who like his style - I do
Elvis Presley - Amazing Grace

Japanese singer with beautiful voice in a short version
Shiroi Kyotatsu_Amazing Grace

Nicely done by a great singer
Amazing Grace - Judy Collins and the choir

Leann has an incredible voice with huge range
Leann Rimes - Amazing Grace

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.
