Dear Thankful one, for the lovely fog pictures . . . I have been to the Blue Ridge and the Smoky Mountains, and remember them well. The fog lies in ribbons across the valleys . . . just beautiful. Thank you for validating my love of it.
(ps. I love all the colours of your posts.)
Also, for your bread photographs. You wrote . . .
"i learn and grow from this highly valued experience and hope all of you can experience the beauty of our shared "daily bread" as in "give us this day our daily bread"

i sort of see this forum as all of us collectively breaking bread together"
I feel the same way . . .

So inspired was I by the "bread" conversation yesterday, that I made a double batch of snow rolls (a relatively quick yeast roll), so I'd have enough for supper, to give to a neighbor, and to freeze. I thought of all you while I kneaded my dough.
Thank you too Buba, for sharing your tradition . . . salt and bread...and your photograph. I understand the bread, but not the salt?
with love . . .

I've just spent a happy hour re-visiting T.O.s pictures which he has posted over the months. When on dial-up connection they often took so long to load that I gave up! So it has been a very pleasant experience to look properly at them. I have only got to page 48 though.

It's quite synchronistic about the bread subject, as yesterday, before I had read the posts, I was reading an article in a magazine about the recent history of bread (meaning the last several hundred years) and it's importance and significance. There is a movement towards going back to 'proper' bread, not the adulterated kind we have got used to. Mind you, aparently there was a time when they put allum and white lead into it! I know there are some pretty suspect ingredients these days, but hopefully not lead!

i will hear the same story from time to time

it is the one where people have been at odds with one another or have not spoken with each other

the first communication between these two people or groups of people is to get together and break bread and share it together

this is a photo of a jew Arna Mer-Khamis sharing bread with a palestinian

she won the right livelihood award for her work helping to unite opposing groups

T.O.,

Thank you for the pictures of the "Stephansdom"!  (You may know that German "Dom" means "cathedral", not "dome", since it is one of many "false friends", i.e. English words that look like German ones, but have a different meaning .)

Thank you also for the series of bread pictures. I agree, breaking bread and sharing it with others is a powerful ritual.

Bread and salt is a Slavic welcome greeting ceremony.
When important, respected or admired guests arrive, they are presented with a loaf of bread placed on a embroidered towel. A salt holder is placed on top of the bread loaf or secured in a hole on the top of the loaf. Nowdays on official occasions, the "bread and salt" is presented by young women dressed in national costumes.
There is an expression "to welcome someone with bread and salt" (since bread is an important part of  a Slavic cuisine , and the salt is the basic ingredient that gives flavour to every meal). This is how the hosts show that the guests are desired and that they wish to share their meal with them.

Thank you Buba for the explanation. I guessed it was something like that.
It's lovely when these old traditions are kept going.

A beautiful tradition Buba . . .
There is something of spirit and soul in the old traditions, isn't there?
Our rush-a-day lives seems to have squeezed all of the thoughtful care and beauty of tradition from our society...a sad thing.
Perhaps we can begin to honour our traditions as the holiday season approaches.
Thank you for sharing this
with love . . .

Buba,
Thanks for sharing the story. We all need to welcome people in everything we do.

I too vow to add some traditions to this holiday celebration and start some new ones.

A new tradition I want to start for me is to write down every day some things that I have seen that day that are beautiful and help me to honor the glorious creation we all share together.

I also agree that salt is what helps flavor our food.

Below is an image of sea salt. How beautiful is it?

My personal world continues to move in positive ways. Nothing dramatic, but steady improvement is a good thing.

I have been so sore from the roofing that I needed to take three days off (something about being older) but will be able to do more today.

It's funny how one day we discover that we do not bounce back as quick as we used to. It's is obvious that this should happen, but disconcerting when it happens to you.

For my blue loving friends, here is a photo of the Salt Flats.

Dear Buba,

I am welcoming you to our Gratefulness Family, saying that we still have the same custom here in Austria - honoring guests with bread and salt!

Buba,
Thanks for the shared bread and salt!

There is just something so special about home made bread isn't there?

And even more special when it is shared with others!

It doesn't have to be formal and informal seems sometimes the most special.

The church below is St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox parish in Lower Manhattan and was destroyed when Tower 2 World Trade Center went down in 9/11.

The print in the background of the top photo is the last photo before the building came down.

The breaking bread is a way to deal with past hatred and rekindle the spirit of love and fogiveness. They are doing this ceremony in a tent seven years after the fact in hopes to rebuild their church.

T.O. thank you for the pictures of the church. Strangely, Chloe and I have been talking about 9/11 today. She has suddenly developed an enquiring mind and is currently studying the 2nd world war in school. She has friends at her school who's Dads are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a little Peruvian girl who is her best friend. Her dad is a Ghurka. I will show Chloe the pictures you have posted.
It's been lovely for me to see Chloe begin to think for herself.

Love to you, Jude
